Pallerone between the Castle Keep and the Nativity Scene

Pallerone combines a medieval historic centre with unusual cultural experiences. The surviving tower of Pallerone’s old castle houses the mechanical nativity scene Presepe Meccanico di Pallerone. The historic building and the display are therefore located in the same historic centre.

The mechanical nativity scene in Pallerone shows the transition from daylight through sunset and a star-filled night to dawn in approximately seven minutes. This sequence gives the experience a clear rhythm and makes the display an independent cultural attraction within the town. The Castello Malaspina di Pallerone is a luxurious 17th-century residence in the centre of Pallerone’s medieval settlement. The great hall contains 17th-century frescoes probably attributed to Stefano Lemmi. The Castello also preserves a chapel dedicated to San Gaetano Thiene. These three features each give the castle its own emphasis: residence, decoration and sacred space.

The Verdentro is Pallerone’s original fortified historic centre. Together with the castle and the church, it represents an urban structure in which defence, religious history and representative architecture are closely interconnected.

Historical Connection and Cycling Tour

Pallerone’s medieval settlement lies on an important route from the Abbey of San Caprasio in Aulla to the mountains of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. This connection places the town within a broader cultural and scenic context.

The 71-kilometre MC4-N010 cycling tour passes through Pallerone twice. The kilometre figure refers to the entire tour, not just the section through Pallerone.

Nativity Scenes During the Christmas Season

During the Christmas holidays, numerous nativity scenes are displayed in Pallerone’s historic centre, in the Verdentro and in the Borgo settecentesco. A dedicated route is provided for this purpose, and the nativity scenes are also included in a competition. The route therefore connects several areas of Pallerone’s historic centre. During the Christmas holidays, the nativity-scene route can be planned as a seasonal highlight of the historic centre.
