Canneto: Historic Town Center and Views in the Val di Cecina

Canneto is situated on a hill at the edge of the Val di Cecina. The town originated around the year 1000 as a castle and combines this early history with a clearly recognizable historic townscape. Its distinctive character can be experienced through walls, towers, lanes, and viewpoints.

A Historic Town Center with Distinctive Towers

The historic center of Canneto has an elliptical layout. Two parallel streets cross the town center; they correspond to Via Vittorio Emanuele and Via Umberto I. From the west, you can enter the center through Porta alla Buca, and from the south through Porta agli Archi.

Canneto preserves numerous residential towers. One of them has a circular layout. A large defensive tower rises above Canneto’s bell tower. Along some sections of the walls near Porta alla Buca, medieval architectural elements are visible. This provides several specific features to discover one after another on a walk through the town.

Church, Abbey, and Literary Traces

The Pieve di San Lorenzo in Canneto is a Romanesque church that was probably built in the 11th or 12th century. It was already known in 1521. The history of Canneto is also connected with the nearby Abbey of San Pietro.

Canneto is also home to the house of a cousin of Giosuè Carducci, where the poet was a guest. Canneto is therefore also linked to a specific literary connection.

On Foot Through Lanes and Landscape

There are numerous viewpoints in Canneto’s lanes. An outer circuit around the inhabited town center runs entirely along Via della Fonte. Walking along this street provides views of Canneto’s inhabited town center. If you would like to combine history and physical activity, this allows you to explore the town within a compact area.

Canneto is surrounded by forests and hills that separate the Sterza Valley from the Cornia Valley. In the area around Monteverdi Marittimo, there are approximately 400 kilometers of cycling and trekking routes in total, which also pass through the Monterufoli e Caselli Nature Reserve. This scale broadens the view from Canneto’s lanes to a landscape that is also relevant for cycling and trekking enthusiasts.

Traditional Cuisine in Summer

The summer program of Monteverdi Marittimo and Canneto includes traditional culinary events. In Canneto, the 44th Tortello Festival is scheduled for early August. Together with the historic townscape, the routes, and the viewpoints, this creates a destination where you can combine culture, local history, landscape, and regional cuisine.
