La Rotta between the River Park and Brickmaking Heritage

La Rotta combines a long history of brickmaking with riverside landscapes, art, and regional chocolate culture. Brickmaking has been documented here since the 11th century, using clay deposits from the Arno and Era rivers. In 1872, as part of this history, the first continuously fired Hoffmann kiln was established. This combination of craftsmanship, industrial history, and nature gives the area a distinctive character.

Art and Brickmaking Heritage in La Rotta

In the Church of San Matteo, the left transept contains Camillo Procaccini’s painting “Assunzione della Vergine.” The work is dated approximately to the period between 1590 and 1610 and adds a significant art-related point of interest to the historical experience. A museum is also housed in the former firing kilns of the Fornace Braccini. Photographs, tools used for processing clay, and various types of manufactured bricks illustrate the craft side of local production there.

The history of La Rotta also includes the monument created in 2009 by Gennaro Strazzullo for people with disabilities and those injured at work. It particularly commemorates the brickmakers who worked at the Braccini brickworks in La Rotta for decades. During your stay, you will therefore encounter not only historic buildings and traces of production, but also a public memorial to the people behind this work.

River Park, Trails, and Leisure

The riverbanks form a nature-focused river park in La Rotta that serves as a meeting place and venue for many events. The Parco Fluviale di La Rotta offers play areas and facilities for leisure activities. In this way, the riverside area combines nature observation, time outdoors, and shared public spaces without allowing the area’s brickmaking heritage to fade into the background.

An approximately 1 km-long cycling and walking path runs eastward through the park to the lakes near Il Botteghino. This route gives you a clearly defined opportunity to explore La Rotta on foot or by bicycle along the park and toward the lakes. Its approximate length helps you fit the outing into your own daily schedule.

Travelling by Riverboat

The riverboat “Andrea da Pontedera” offers another perspective on La Rotta. It connects the old town harbor with the landing stage at Parco della Fornace in La Rotta. Reservations are required for boat trips. On certain dates, trips also depart from the river park in La Rotta. Chocolate Culture on Site

Chocolate culture also has a specific connection to La Rotta: the historic, internationally renowned chocolate company Amedei is based here and has received multiple awards, including the Golden Bean Award. Tours of the chocolate-making process were offered there. Together with the brickmaking tradition, this creates a local character in which industrial heritage, craft production, and culinary renown stand closely side by side.
