Historical traces in and around the town centre

The medieval entrance to Palaia is topped by a pointed bell tower and flanked by a low polygonal tower. The Pieve di San Martino is a Romanesque-Gothic terracotta building from the 13th century, with an external arched frieze and a façade with three portals. It is located directly outside the walls of Palaia on the road towards Colleoli and San Gervasio. The Torre dell’Orologio was originally a town gate called “Arco del Podestà”, dated to the year 1500 and featuring Ghibelline crenellations. In 1655, it was converted into a clock tower.

Museums and destinations in the surrounding area

The Museo della civiltà contadina di Montefoscoli documents local traditions and the ways of life of past generations. Its second section deals with local and European history from the late 18th to the early 19th century. The archaeological site Parco Preistorico Peccioli is located in the vicinity of Palaia. Also in the vicinity of Palaia are the Fondazione San Miniato Promozione museum, the Raccolta D'Arte dell'Arciconfraternita della Misericordia museum, the Museo Diocesano Di Arte Sacra, the Giardino dei Pini garden and the Parco dei Salici park.

The rural landscape of Palaia includes gentle hills, ancient forests, rows of cypress trees, olive groves and vineyards. The Strada del Vino delle Colline Pisane runs through Palaia. The route “Palaia: arte tra mistero e bellezza” can be completed on foot, by bicycle, on a Vespa or scooter, or in a motorhome. This provides different modes of transport for exploring the themes of the route. Another option is the free guided tour “Camminando per Palaia – Walking through Palaia”. It takes place on Tuesday mornings during the tourism season from June to September and includes the main historical and art-historical sights in the centre of Palaia.

The mountains Monte Cascetto and Monte Serra are located in the wider regional surroundings of Palaia. You can therefore include these two names in your travel plans as reference points for a broader landscape setting, without assigning them to the centre of Palaia.
