Tibetan Culture at the Istituto Lama Tzong Khapa

The Istituto Lama Tzong Khapa in Pomaia is a Tibetan Buddhist center of the Mahayana tradition. Its park contains stupas, prayer wheels, statues, and frescoes in the Tibetan style. The grounds can therefore be explored not only through their religious significance, but also through specific architectural and artistic elements.

The areas open to visitors in the castle of the Istituto Lama Tzong Khapa include the Lama Yeshe Hall, the large meditation hall, and the Mandala Hall. A large wooden mandala is located there. The Gompa di Cenresig also stands on the grounds. It is a former chapel that was restored according to the tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. The Gompa stands at the highest point of the grounds in a grove of oak and holm oak trees; its ceiling is decorated with frescoes of Tara and Buddha Shakyamuni.

Another special feature is the Casa degli Tsa Tsa of the Istituto Lama Tzong Khapa. It contains 100,000 bas-reliefs created by Cesare di Giovanni during a retreat and is crowned by a statue of Buddha Shakyamuni. The library contains around 8,000 predominantly specialist books on Eastern philosophies, Buddhism and, in particular, Tibetan Buddhism, as well as Buddhist art and iconography.
