A historic village with many traces of everyday life

Until the 1970s, sharecropper families lived in the historic village of Terriccio. The village included a church, a school, a bakery, a brick kiln, mills and a carpenter’s workshop. The village structure therefore encompassed religious, educational, supply-related and craft activities. In the former village, everyday life, work and religious practice were closely connected. Mass is celebrated every Sunday in the church of the historic village of Terriccio.

Wine and a medieval past

During a visit to the Castello del Terriccio winery, visitors are taken to the cellar, where they learn about the winemaking techniques used there. The connection with wine remains confined to the winery’s cellar.

Castle ruins and the estate’s former size

The remains of the medieval Castello di Doglia lie on the Castello del Terriccio estate, in the most panoramic part of the property. The estate’s medieval past is reflected in these castle ruins. Castello del Terriccio was once home to more than 500 people. The estate’s former size is therefore also part of the history of the place.

Views across islands and sea

From the Castello del Terriccio estate, four islands of the Tuscan Archipelago can be seen on clear days. At sunset, the sun disappears over the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Regional cuisine in a historic setting

The Terraforte restaurant is located in a restored historic carpenter’s workshop in the castle village of Castello del Terriccio and combines tradition with contemporary design. The former workshop thus provides the setting for a modern gastronomic use without losing its historical connection.

The annual gastronomic event “Cucina Povera” reached its 34th edition in 2025. Its opening included an evening at Castello del Terriccio with a panel discussion on the region’s gastronomic quality. The programme of the 2025 edition also included a dinner at the panoramic terrace of the Terraforte restaurant, available exclusively by reservation. The dishes prepared by Chef Tomei highlighted the region’s culinary ties.

The return of “La Cucina della Tradizione” to Castello del Terriccio was announced for 18 July 2026. Local flavours and biodiversity were to take centre stage. At “La Cucina della Tradizione”, biodiversity directs attention beyond the cuisine to the region’s natural diversity.
