Lizzano between Murals and Mountain History

Lizzano reveals its special character where local history and art become directly visible along the streets. Around 30 murals can be seen on Via Sala. The murals are located along the town’s main streets and thus shape the perception of Lizzano in a very tangible way. The first cycle of murals in Lizzano was created in 1988 by artists from the Florentine group Gruppo Donatello. It was preceded by an invitation from the municipality of San Marcello P.se and the parish priest of Lizzano, Don Toccafondi. The creation of this first cycle is therefore one of the established historical reference points for the murals.

Church and Traces of the Mountain Community

Another important reference point is the Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta in Lizzano. It is first mentioned in 998 and houses a crucifix by Baccio da Montelupo. The history of the mountain community is also linked to the town: from 1361 onward, the first captains of the mountain community resided alternately in Lizzano and San Marcello.

The Monumento al sergente Murphy e ai Caduti X divisione da montagna V armata commemorates the American Sergeant John Murphy’s calling to the priesthood and those who fell in the 10th Mountain Division of the 5th Army. Together with the Pieve and the history of the captains, this monument provides access to different historical layers of Lizzano.
