Spicchio and the Heritage of Villa Rospigliosi

Spicchio combines a historically shaped townscape with a landscape in which paths, gardens and the Villa Rospigliosi complex are closely interwoven. Spicchio has been mentioned since the 15th century as the administrative centre of the Rospigliosi family’s estate. The villa itself occupies a dominant position at the upper end of the slope descending from Pistoia towards the town of Lamporecchio. Historic Park with Special Details

The area around the villa includes the Parco Storico I Giardinetti. Today it is a municipal garden; originally, it belonged to Villa Rospigliosi. Its distinctive features are the 18th-century paths, laid out in an original radial pattern. A walk along it involves allowing for approximately two kilometres through the wooded slope. The path is therefore suitable for a leisurely approach to the historic ensemble, without losing sight of its approximate length or its wooded course.

Avenue, Estate Complex and Giardinetti

In addition to Villa Rospigliosi, the Spicchio complex includes the “Villa Vecchia” and the outbuildings of an agricultural enterprise. A tree-lined avenue leads down from the complex to the town. The Parco dei Giardinetti branches off from this avenue. These spatial relationships give the local landscape its clear sequence of estate complex, tree-lined avenue and garden area.
