Acquaviva di Montepulciano: History, Nature and Local Culture
Acquaviva between Roman History and Local Culture
Acquaviva di Montepulciano particularly appeals to visitors who want to combine historical traces with everyday Italian town life. The archaeological site of Fontegrande preserves a Roman thermal complex from the early Imperial period, which was abandoned around the 5th century AD. Fontegrande is also associated with the Roman road station “statio ad Novas”, recorded along the Cassia Adrianea in the Tabula Peutingeriana.
The town’s cultural heritage also includes the parish church of Acquaviva, dedicated to San Vittorino and the Immaculate Conception. A painting of the Annunciation in the Chiesa di San Vittorino is attributed to the painter Bartolomeo Barbiani. The Teatro dei Concordi adds a distinctive architectural accent with its rectangular auditorium, gallery and rich Liberty-style decoration. The theater was inaugurated in July 1908.
Theater, Festivals and Regional Specialties
The summer season supported by the Comune di Montepulciano takes place at the Teatro dei Concordi, which also hosts other local cultural events. Alongside the historic architecture, this places a cultural program at the center of the experience, allowing your stay to be complemented by performances and events.
The Live Rock Festival reached its 30th edition in 2026 and takes place in Acquaviva near Montepulciano, in the arena of the Giardini Ex Fierale. In addition to music, the festival offers traditional food made with local ingredients. The agricultural fair held in Acquaviva di Montepulciano for decades was renamed “Festa di San Vittorino e dell’Aglione della Valdichiana” about ten years ago.
Lago di Montepulciano and Paths through the Landscape
The Lago di Montepulciano nature reserve covers 470 hectares. A bird-ringing station at the lake studies the migration of European birds toward the Mediterranean region and African areas. In addition to its landscape, Lago di Montepulciano therefore has a clearly recognizable significance for observing and researching bird migration.
The Sentiero della Torretta leads through flooded hygrophilous woodland to an observation tower above the reed beds. For excursions and activities at the lake, the Centro Visite at Lago di Montepulciano is a starting point. Guided trips on the lake in a 14-seat electric boat can be booked there. The Centro Visite is also a stopover for hikers on the Sentiero della Bonifica.
Which Focuses Suit Your Stay
For a stay in Acquaviva, you can choose the focus according to your interests: ancient history, sacred art and theater are suited to culture-oriented days, while the nature reserve, bird migration, observation tower, lake activities and hiking trails offer a different pace. When choosing a hotel, it is therefore worth considering first whether cultural discoveries or nature and outdoor experiences should take up the most space in your travel plans.
