Church History in Palazzone

Construction of the present-day Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta began on June 6, 1659. On October 29, 1794, a decree by Bishop Pannilini made it the church of Palazzone’s new parish. At the same time, it belonged to the early Christian Pieve churches of the Diocese of Chiusi. Its interior consists of three naves.

The Cappella di Santa Lucia is also part of the town’s religious history. It was built so that Capuchin friars could celebrate services there. Today, it is the only surviving chapel of a complex that originally consisted of three chapels. In the first half of the 18th century, several wealthy families financed this complex. Santa Lucia combines preserved architecture with the history of religious use and private patronage.

Piazzetta, Fountains and Lavatoi

The Piazzetta del Pozzo is considered the most characteristic corner of Palazzone and was created as the courtyard of the central town center. The fountain in the piazzetta was a focal point of social life for a long time. Springs and lavatoi became places for social exchange, encounters and conversation. The lavatoi visible today date back to a modern renewal. They are already associated with springs in the 18th-century Leopoldine cadastre; they were probably used even earlier.

Historical Connections Between Fighine and Palazzone

Palazzone remained a settlement with market functions. The town’s history is closely linked to the castle of Fighine. However, its origins are probably connected with a Roman rural estate along the Orvieto–Chiusi section of the ancient Via Cassia. Another hypothesis about its origins is associated with pilgrimages and linked to the historic name “Villa o Palazzo di San Pellegrino” near Fighine, documented in a charter from 1058.

Palazzone on the Cycling Loop

There is also a clear thematic connection for cyclists: the “Anello del Santuario Ritrovato” cycling loop passes through Palazzone. Along this route, you encounter the small town that developed as a stopping point for pilgrims traveling through this area. Palazzone thus combines a cycling-tourism perspective with its pilgrimage-related local history.

Wine and Regional Festival Culture

At the Festa del Vino, wines from the surrounding area could be tasted; at the same time, the event combined wine enjoyment and regional cuisine with music, dancing and entertainment.
