Pievasciata: Art, History and Wine in Chianti
Sculptures Between Art and Nature
The Parco Sculture del Chianti is a permanent exhibition of contemporary installations and sculptures that combines art and nature. Near Pievasciata, this open-air museum of contemporary art is located in a seven-hectare woodland. The forest provides the spatial setting for the installations and sculptures.
The circular route through the park is approximately 1.5 kilometres long, has inclines of up to 20 percent in some places, and can be used with suitable prams and wheelchairs. When planning your day, therefore, not only the distance but also the inclines are relevant if a suitable pram or wheelchair is being used.
The Pieve di San Giovanni Battista
The Pieve di San Giovanni Battista is one of the oldest parish churches in Chianti; the first records of it date from 1086. The surviving early medieval masonry dates from the 8th to the 11th century. It also features a 13th-century bell tower and significant interior alterations from 1748.
After 1229, the pieve was converted into a fortified complex. The surviving elements include a second tower, a defensive tower and a curtain wall that still encloses a courtyard today.
At the pieve, sacred architecture and the history of fortification come together in the same building.
Wine and Culinary Experiences on the Strada Provinciale 9
The Wine Safari Experience at Vallepicciola on the Strada Provinciale 9 di Pievasciata takes you by jeep through the vineyards and to the wine cellar. It is followed by a tasting with local cold cuts and cheese.
The Truffle Hunting Experience at Vallepicciola combines a guided truffle hunt with a tasting of local specialities. The Grand Cru Experience includes a walk through the vineyards, a visit to the wine cellar, a tasting and a chef's platter.
The three formats combine outdoor activity with a wine tasting, but differ in terms of the activity and scope: the Truffle Hunting Experience includes three wines, the Grand Cru Experience four Cru wines and the Wine Safari five characteristic wines.
