Ponte D'Arbia lies along the Arbia watercourse between Monteroni d'Arbia and Buonconvento. At the same time, the town is located on the Via Cassia and along the route of the historic Via Francigena. This combination of watercourse, Via Cassia and historic Via Francigena gives Ponte D'Arbia a clear historical context.

Bridge and Local History

The bridge over the Arbia watercourse gave Ponte D'Arbia its name and has five arches. It was built in 1388 by the Comune di Siena and rebuilt in 1656 under Prince Mattia de' Medici, the governor of Siena. The two years mark two construction phases and make the bridge a historical reference point for the town.

The local history goes back even further: in 1037, when Ponte d'Arbia was still known as Borgo d'Arbia, the town was the setting for an important legal act. It established that the Chiatina estate belonged to the della Berardenga monastery and, on its behalf, to Abbot Ubertino. This event connects the old place name with a specific property arrangement.

The preserved Mulino di Serravalle mill is located by the bridge; it is also known as Mulino di Sprenna. It continued grinding grain until the previous century.

Routes, Culture and Special Details

Ponte del Pellegrino is a pedestrian bridge made entirely of wood and steel. It is 40 metres long and two and a half metres wide; it was designed by Studio Lastri Associati in Siena. For route planning, two dimensions of this footbridge remain relevant: its length of 40 metres and its walking width of two and a half metres.

Since 1983, the Centro Culturale “Mons. L.Cresti” has served as a cultural centre and pilgrims' hostel on the Via Francigena. Don Dino Fabiani developed the roof shape of the Chiesa Sacra Famiglia after observing a limpet clinging to a rock.

Places in the Surrounding Area

The area around Ponte D'Arbia includes the Abbazia di Monte Oliveto, a monastery, and the Fortezza di Montalcino, a fortress. Poggio Cerrete, a mountain, is also in the area; the Bosco della Ragnaia park is located there as well.

The wider regional surroundings of Ponte D'Arbia also include Castello di Capraia, a castle, Bologna Buonsignori, a museum, Poggio la Biffa, a mountain, and Cappella di Piazza, a natural archway. This broader geographical level expands the selection to include historical, cultural and scenic points of reference without assigning them to the immediate locality.

Art as Another Local Reference

The annual sculpture symposium in Ponte D'Arbia included sculptors, predominantly from Japan; their works were donated to the area. This adds an artistic aspect to the buildings and historical references associated with Ponte D'Arbia and the area.
