San Chimento combines historic buildings with paths through the landscape and the C8 trekking route.

The Villa di San Chimento e cappella is classified as a real estate complex in Casole d'Elsa. Villa San Chimento is a building dating from the late 16th century. Its main building is lined by an Italian-style garden.

The Etruscan tumulus of Mucellena probably dates from the 6th century BC. From the main road, it can be reached via a short walk along a forest path. The Mucellena tumulus is part of the Cammino d'Etruria Centro.

The first documented evidence of the Pieve di San Giovanni Battista in Pievescola dates from 1032. Shortly after Villa San Chimento, you reach the small church of Santa Fiora, which dates from 1103.

Landscape of the Montagnola Senese

The forests of the Montagnola Senese extend across parts of the areas of Casole d'Elsa and Monteriggioni.

The Pievescola–San Chimento–Scorgiano–Marmoraia–Pievescola route follows a road lined with old stone walls along the northern side of the Montagnola. From this route, there are views of the hills around Mensano and of Casole. Old walls, wooded sections and open views of the hills give the route a distinctly scenic character. The route runs along the northern side of the Montagnola from Pievescola via San Chimento, Scorgiano and Marmoraia, returning to Pievescola.

Trekking with Cultural Stops

The C8 trekking route is approximately 9.5 kilometres long and has 324 metres of elevation gain. It is a circular route of moderate difficulty that runs mostly along unpaved paths. When planning the hike, in addition to the approximate distance, the 324 metres of elevation gain and the predominantly unpaved surface also count. The circular route and moderate difficulty are likewise relevant if you want to estimate the duration of your tour in advance for your own time planning based on the route distance. The number of kilometres alone therefore does not represent the full planning framework for the C8.

The Pieve dei Santi Maria e Gervasio is also explored as part of the C8 trekking route. The route also includes Villa San Chimento. Anyone choosing the C8 exclusively because of its route data should plan the two cultural stops as part of the same circular route.

The route “Escursione il 12 febbraio 2023, 09:50” also passes through San Chimento. The two routes differ in their itineraries: the C8 is a circular route, while the route “Escursione il 12 febbraio 2023, 09:50” passes through San Chimento in its own sequence.
