Ancaiano Between History and Paths

Ancaiano represents a local history marked by fortifications, sacred architecture and medieval architectural elements. The fortification of Ancaiano was destroyed in 1403, rebuilt and finally completely dismantled in 1554 by the Austrian-Spanish troops of Charles V. The village’s medieval architectural elements include a stone tower with a sloping base and round-arched windows.

The present-day Church of San Bartolomeo also reveals several historical layers. It was built in 1660 and replaced an older church documented since the 13th century. The Church of San Bartolomeo in Ancaiano displays Renaissance forms. The village’s cultural history also includes two important artists from different fields of art and architecture: the painter and sculptor Domenico Beccafumi (1486–1551) is one of Ancaiano’s well-known sons. The architect Baldassarre Peruzzi was born in Ancaiano on 15 January 1480.

Hiking Trails with Different Trail Sections

CAI hiking trail no. 112 follows the paved road towards Ancaiano for 200 metres and then branches onto a mule track through a forest with oaks, Turkey oaks and hornbeams. The route therefore combines a clearly described road section with a forest path and allows the landscape to be experienced across different surfaces, without any particular difficulty or accessibility being inferred from this. Nevertheless, the surface is a specific detail when planning this route: the 200 metres of asphalt are followed by the mule track, meaning that the starting section consists of two different parts.

Route 110 runs in the area around Ancaiano. Another route is “Le pievi della Montagnola Senese”: it reaches Ancaiano from Villa di Cetinale via an unpaved road. Before arriving in Ancaiano, the route follows a paved road that continues to Piscialembita. Paved and unpaved sections are therefore equally part of the route environment described.

Castles, a Palace and Mountains in the Surrounding Area

Palazzalbero, a palace, lies in the immediate surroundings of Ancaiano. Celsa is a castle in the immediate surroundings of Ancaiano. The castles in the surrounding area also include Castello di Montarrenti and Castiglion Che Dio Sol Sa. These place references broaden the view of Ancaiano to include other historic buildings, without equating them with the buildings in the village.
