Ceramics and Urban History in Deruta

Deruta is best understood through its ceramic tradition. Local artisans continue to practise it, while the techniques are passed down from generation to generation. If you are interested in Italian craftsmanship, historic sites and museums, you will encounter various ways here to explore the development of the town and its maiolica.

At the Museo Regionale della Ceramica di Deruta, the archaeological section also includes the Fornaci di San Salvatore. An underground tunnel connects this area with the museum. The production complex was in operation from the second half of the 15th century until the beginning of the 18th century and includes two kilns as well as a basin for clarifying the clay. This makes it possible to view ceramics not only as a decorative craft, but also through their historic production spaces.

The Antica Fornace Grazia in the historic centre of Deruta has been set up as a museum and exhibition centre. It preserves the rooms that were used for firing maiolica. The municipal tour of Deruta also begins at the Ex Fornace Grazia. It traces the town's history, its churches and historic documents, offering an independent way to explore the town's themes.

The museum landscape also includes the Pinacoteca Comunale. It is housed in the 14th-century Palazzo dei Consoli and, together with the Museo Regionale della Ceramica, forms the town's museum complex. Another historic landmark is the Chiesa di San Francesco in Deruta: following its reconstruction after a major earthquake, it was consecrated in 1388. Its interior contains significant frescoes, including works by Domenico Alfani.

Trails and Landscapes around Deruta

Even beyond the museums, you will find options for an active day trip. On the Perugia Vecchia hill, on the boundary between the municipalities of Deruta, Torgiano and Bettona, there are unspoilt trails for trekking, mountain biking and trail running.

Near Deruta is the Museo del vino, a museum. The surrounding area also includes Castello Di Cisterna, a castle, and the Museo Storico Perugina, a museum. Monte Veduta del Lago and Poggio delle Civitelle are two mountains in the area around Deruta. Further afield in the region lies Monte Vergnano, also a mountain. The Arco dei Gigli is located there as a natural arch. These varied destinations broaden the view from the ceramic town to museums, historic buildings and landscape features.

A Local Taste Throughout the Year

The culinary side includes the Sagra di Castelleone, held at the end of July. On this occasion, you can try the traditional dish “CANNIBALE”: it consists of marinated pork with juniper. The event combines a specific seasonal occasion with a speciality that can add a distinctive touch to your travel plans.
