History in the Townscape

Verchiano reveals itself through an unusual combination of local history, religious memory and trails through the mountain landscape. Castello di Verchiano originally belonged to the Duchy of Spoleto. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta, dating from the 15th century, offers another historical point of reference in the town. In the lower part of Verchiano stands a public fountain dating from approximately the 16th century. Its oval bears a boar, the heraldic emblem of Castello di Verchiano. San Salvatore and Religious Tradition

A distinct historical thread leads to the Sanctuary of San Salvatore, which has been documented since 1333–1334. In the 16th century, the sanctuary briefly housed the mortal remains of Blessed Paoluccio Trinci. On Ascension Day, a procession from Verchiano reaches the Church of San Salvatore. During this procession, it reaches a sarcophagus regarded as the tomb of Blessed Paoluccio Trinci. The feast day thus connects a specific route from Verchiano to San Salvatore with a religious memory reaching back over several centuries.

Monte San Salvatore and the Via della Spina

Above Verchiano, Monte San Salvatore rises to an elevation of 1,150 m and offers an exceptional panorama. The history of the trails also shapes the character of the surrounding area. The Via della Spina was a pre-Roman road that connected Spoleto with the Marche and the Adriatic coast via the Colfiorito Pass. Its ancient route ran from Spoleto through Orsano, Verchiano and Colfiorito. On the plateau north of Verchiano, a wide gravel road follows the route of this ancient Via della Spina. Verchiano is also connected by trails on Monte Puro. The Anello del Monte Puro loop begins in Verchiano and crosses the mountain ridge along livestock trails and gravel tracks that are also suitable for mountain bikes. In addition, the trail marked 374C begins at the northern edge of Verchiano and climbs to the northern summit of Monte Puro. The Anello del Monte Puro therefore represents a loop over the mountain ridge, while trail 374C describes the ascent to a specific summit. These different routes help you organise your days around a loop hike, an ascent, the landscape and historical interests.
