Volta Mantovana: Fortress, Palazzo Gonzaga and the Mincio

Fortress and country villa in the town center

Volta Mantovana reveals its history at several specific, identifiable sites. In the town center stands Castello Gonzaga di Volta Mantovana, an 11th-century fortress. Palazzo Gonzaga was built around the middle of the 15th century by Ludovico Gonzaga and Barbara of Brandenburg as a country villa. Both buildings offer different historical points of reference for your exploration: the Castello represents the early fortification, while the Palazzo was built as a country villa.

Palazzo Gonzaga contains 16th-century decorations, as well as frescoes and wooden ceilings, particularly in the halls on the first floor. Via Carolingia and sacred art

The National Exhibition of Passito and Meditation Wines takes place in Volta Mantovana every year toward the end of April. This event includes guided tastings of sweet wines from Italian regions. They take place in the stables, fresco-decorated rooms and Italian gardens of Palazzo Gonzaga. At this event, the wines are thus presented alongside the Palazzo's historic surroundings.

On August 10, the gardens of Palazzo Gonzaga host the Calici di Stelle event. Calici di Stelle combines moraine wines with traditional foods and products such as De.Co. Capunsel, Grana Padano DOP and Mantua mustard. This gives your travel planning two clearly dated cultural and culinary highlights: the annual event toward the end of April and the event on August 10.

Parco del Mincio and the river landscape

Volta Mantovana is located within the protected area of the Parco del Mincio regional park. In the area around Volta Mantovana, the Mincio River flows rapidly over a gravel bed and descends across several changes in elevation.
