Churches and Historical Traces in Melara

The Chiesa di San Materno is at the heart of the local architectural history. The present-day church was built between 1704 and 1732. It was designed by the brothers Sante and Vincenzo Santini from Ferrara. The new Chiesa di San Materno was blessed on 25 May 1732 and opened for worship despite being unfinished. The same building therefore brings together a clearly dated start of construction, the origins of its designers and a distinctive phase of its early use.

Another historical layer is represented by Melara's present-day bell tower. It was built in 1404 on the surviving remains of a castle. This castle had been almost completely destroyed on 9 April 1397 during the war between Mantua and Ferrara. Those interested in the development of fortified settlements and in traces of political conflicts in architecture will find a tangible connection to Melara's past here.

The Chiesa di Santa Croce also preserves a distinct religious connection: it houses a polychrome wooden statue of the dead Christ. The Chiesetta di Santo Stefano is also associated with an annual Santa Croce fair. It takes place on the Sunday after 3 May and was established in 1865 under Austrian rule. The two churches thus represent different forms of religious tradition – both a preserved work of art and a recurring fair with a historically documented origin.

The Museo Archeologico Comunale in Melara is an important cultural institution that preserves and promotes the archaeological heritage of a community. It complements the churches and the bell tower with an archaeological perspective on the local past. Tortelli are also part of the local character. They are prepared by hand according to recipes from the local gastronomic tradition that have been passed down through generations. Around 25 years ago, an initiative by the Pro Loco was launched in Melara to promote a traditional product of the region. It brought pumpkin and the old speciality tortello together.
