Canosa Sannita between wine trails and cultural heritage

Canosa Sannita combines a rural landscape with traces of local history and paths through the vineyards. In the town center and surrounding area, you will find cultural landmarks and old tratturi. This makes it possible to explore the town in different ways: with a short walk, along signposted paths or as part of a circular route of around 12 kilometers.

Culture and history in the town

The Museo della Guerra per la Pace is located in the historic Palazzo Martucci. The museum preserves around 1,000 historical objects connected with the two wars. During your stay, it offers a tangible way to engage with a part of the history represented in Canosa Sannita by a single building.

The parish church of San Filippo e Giacomo houses an intricately crafted wooden bust of Saint Blaise dating from the 18th century. At the same time, its own architectural history is part of the townscape: the church was rebuilt after the Second World War. Several caves dug into the sandstone are also still visible near the settlement. They served as refuges for brigands and add another historical trace to the surrounding area.

Rural tradition is also present in the surrounding area. The Casino di Moggio is a building associated with this tradition and can be found along the signposted paths around Canosa Sannita. During the annual celebration of Saint Anthony, the Carri di Sant’Antonio pass through the streets of Canosa Sannita. Such local features complement the quieter traces of the church, museum and landscape.

Wine trails, springs and old tratturi

The municipality of Canosa Sannita has established the local network of paths known as I Sentieri del Vino. The paths begin in the town center and run through vineyards along routes traditionally used by farmers. Numerous information boards make the paths easy to identify. The boards explain the local grape varieties Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Trebbiano and Pecorino. If you would like to combine the landscape with the regional wine culture, they also provide guidance on the surrounding area and its grape varieties.

A short walk from the town center leads to the Fonte Vecchia. For a longer exploration, the old Tratturo Magno crosses the surrounding area of Canosa Sannita. The old Tratturo Centurelle-Montesecco also runs through the area. Its section through the vineyards offers views of the Adriatic and the Apennines.

Routes for different day plans

A scenic circular route of around 12 kilometers can be driven by car on fully paved roads. On the Cammino di San Tommaso, a long and comfortable road leads from the monastery to the vicinity of the settlement of Canosa Sannita. This means that, in addition to the paths starting in the town center, longer connections through the surrounding area are also available.
