Lentella between gypsum landscape and local history

Lentella lies on the gypsum vein of Abruzzo, on a rocky cliff between gentle clay hills. The town is located at 398 meters above sea level; from Lentella, the view extends to the peaks of the Maiella. The municipality thus combines a striking landscape with a townscape in which archaeological remains, churches, and the history of the fortified village stand closely side by side.

Gypsum landscape and trails around Lentella

A central natural feature is the I Gessi di Lentella route. It begins at the Lentella junction on the Fondovalle Trigno and is 12.5 kilometers long. This route is particularly suitable for mountain biking. Most of it runs within the SIC “Gessi di Lentella” and passes through a landscape whose geological character is directly connected with gypsum.

Monte Calvario consists predominantly of gypsum and is situated in an area with small woods and scrubland. The Gessi di Lentella area is home to typically Mediterranean vegetation, including species that are rare in the region. These include wild orchids and the feather grass of the Monti Frentani, scientifically known as Stipa austroitalica subsp. frentana. Those who observe the surroundings carefully will therefore encounter not only a distinctive rocky landscape here, but also characteristic plant life.

A second trail connection is the Sentiero dei Gessi. It ends at Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi in the municipality of Lentella and crosses Via dell'Olio in Lentella. Both local references also make the trails understandable in relation to the village: the landscape and the town center are not separate themes standing side by side, but are connected by specific routes.

Archaeology, churches, and fortified village

The Castello Manno archaeological complex in the locality of La Coccetta includes fragments from the Bronze Age. In Contrada Casale dei Monaci, there are also the remains of an old Benedictine settlement built on the remains of a pagan temple. These two sites point to different eras and give the area around Lentella a multifaceted historical dimension.

The churches also shape the town's history. The Chiesa dei Santi Patroni Cosma e Damiano was built at the end of the 18th century, while the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta was constructed around 1500. Palazzo Catalano is a characteristic building of Lentella's fortified village. Near Lentella's old cemetery lie the ruins of the Chiesa di San Giovanni, providing another concrete link to the older structure of the town.

Local features and specialty

The gypsum-water spring is located in Contrada Casale dei Monaci and is still used today for washing the eyes. Its water has traditionally been attributed with healing properties; this tradition is part of the spring's local distinctiveness. Lentella's culinary specialties include fried sweet scrippelle.
