Mezzano: Church and Architectural History near Miglianico

The Chiesa di Sant’Antonio Abate is located in the village of Mezzano, part of Miglianico, in Contrada Cerreto. The Chiesa di Sant’Antonio Abate in Mezzano

The Chiesa di Sant’Antonio Abate was built in the 16th century as a cemetery chapel. Its location in Mezzano and in Contrada Cerreto is therefore just as relevant to its classification as its later ecclesiastical history: in 1973, the church was transferred to the ecclesiastical community in exchange for a chapel in the cemetery of Miglianico. The two parishes of Miglianico were merged in 2006; a parish had already been established in 1974 under the title “Resurrezione di Nostro Signore Gesù Cristo.”

Architecturally, the church features a rectangular brick façade with a crowning cornice and a gabled upper section. The portal has a surround decorated with small diamond-shaped points. The structure also includes a newer bell tower made of two tapering reinforced-concrete walls. Inside, a single-nave space lies beneath two sloping roof surfaces with imitation wooden beams. The interior walls are completely clad in exposed brick; on the chancel wall, the bricks form a pattern of blind arches. These details make the church particularly interesting for visitors who want to compare façades, materials, and construction solutions in greater detail.

Further historical traces in the municipality

The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo also has a long history. It is already documented in the Rationes of 1324–1325 as the “Chiesa di Sant’Angelo” and was rebuilt in the 16th century by the Valignani barons. Three new artistic doors dedicated to Santa Croce, San Pantaleone, and San Michele Arcangelo were inaugurated at the church.

The historic residence “Masci” was built from the 11th century onward as a defensive and observation fortress. In 1515, it was rebuilt by the Valignani barons. Around 1950, it underwent another reconstruction by Francesco Bonfanti and Filippo Masci, with significant involvement from Gio Ponti. The same bricks were used as those recovered from the ruins of the old castle. This makes it possible to view different historical layers side by side in the municipality, without reducing Mezzano’s religious architecture to a single construction date.
