Filetto among Views, Sacred Buildings and History

Filetto combines striking viewpoints, religious buildings and regional traditions with a location from which the mountain area can also be reached. The Maiella massif can be seen from Filetto’s Belvedere. Above the vegetation over the Venna valley, the sea is also visible. These two perspectives give the surrounding area its distinctive landscape character, without requiring you to limit yourself to just one type of excursion.

Architectural Testaments and Sacred Places

An independent monument is the Allegoria della morte del soldato, a bronze group of figures depicting a standing soldier holding a fallen comrade. At Colle dei Saraceni, a preserved structure stands on a high, steep rocky cliff and overlooks the valley of the Torrente Dendalo. It was built using the opus reticulatum technique, a network-like masonry method.

The Santuario di Maria Santissima della Libera stands above a chapel for which reliable evidence has existed since the 14th century. The sacred building has a floor plan with three naves. The rock church of Santa Maria del Soccorso on the road to Canosa Sannita is also part of the religious architecture.

Santa Maria ad Nives houses the canvas painting La Madonna del Rosario from the 16th or 17th century. Behind the main altar, there is also a polychrome stained-glass window depicting the Last Supper. The church was built after the demolition of the old Madonna della Neve church in the centre of Filetto, which had been damaged during the Second World War. Santa Maria ad Nives has a free-standing bell tower with a square floor plan and five levels. The Chiesa di San Rocco is also located on Via Ruelle.

Peperoncino and Excursions into the Mountain Area

Filetto dedicates a major festival to its hot peperoncino in August. During the Festival del Peperoncino Piccante, you can try typical dishes from Abruzzese cuisine seasoned with local peperoncino. The event thus combines a regional product with an explicitly culinary celebration. The Pro Loco of Filetto is a non-profit organisation that primarily promotes the area and aims to protect its cultural, landscape and historical heritage.

The mountain area can be reached from Filetto by car in about half an hour.
