Cultural Sites and Memorials

The present-day Chiesa di San Nicola di Bari was completely rebuilt at the end of the 18th century after its medieval origins. It houses two old processional crosses by the artist and goldsmith Nicola da Guardiagrele. The Torre di Bene houses the Museo Modesto Parlatore, currently hosts various exhibitions and also contains the library of the Città del Vino. The Teatro di Orsogna was designed at the end of the 19th century by the architect Taddeo Salvini.

Other independent memorial sites add to this cultural picture: The Cappella di San Bernardino da Siena is located on the Tratturo Magno, now Via Raffaele Paolucci. Access is via an unpaved surface and is considered freely accessible. The Parco della Rimembranza contains the Mausoleo di Raffaele Paolucci and the neoclassical Sacrario dei Caduti della Grande Guerra. A preserved cave houses work tools, a kiln and terracotta fragments from Orsogna’s ceramic tradition.

The Festa dei Talami

The tradition of the Festa dei Talami dates back to the 16th century. The Festa presents living biblical tableaux in honor of Maria Santissima del Rifugio and involves Orsogna’s seven districts. The Talami tradition attracts an audience every year and generates lively participation. It is therefore one of the defining cultural themes to consider when learning about the town.

Parks, Landscape and Former Uses

The Convento Francescano della Santissima Annunziata is part of the equipped dell’Annunziata Territorial Park. The Parco fluviale dell’Annunziata surrounds Orsogna’s built-up area. Rare orchids, primroses and cyclamens may occur among its vegetation. Small waterways once powered several mills, which are now abandoned. The clay soil features formations known as Calanchi or “li cannanune”.

Events and Sporting Connections

The FAI program in Orsogna on May 23, 2026 combined a walk in the Parco dell’Annunziata with a subsequent visit to the refectory of the Franciscan monastery. In cycling, the sixth stage of the 2022 Giro-E is documented as covering 93 kilometers from Orsogna to Blockhaus. The documented distance of 93 kilometers provides a concrete benchmark for assessing the scale of the sporting event. Orsogna was also among the municipalities that hosted the Italian individual championship in “Lancio della Forma di Formaggio” in 2017.
