Palombaro amid nature, history and cuisine

Palombaro combines a far-reaching highland landscape with religious and social sites of remembrance, as well as a distinctive culinary tradition. Nature between riverbank and summit

The Feudo Ugni State Nature Reserve lies within the municipality of Palombaro and extends from the banks of the Avello River at an elevation of 450 metres to the summit of Monte Focalone at 2,692 metres. These elevations convey the protected area's considerable vertical extent and place Palombaro within a mountainous landscape whose dimensions are not limited to the town centre.

The Fara San Martino–Palombaro Nature Reserve encompasses karst valleys, large rocky bastions and high-altitude grasslands. Its flora ranges from Mediterranean to alpine species. The reserve is freely accessible via the park's official trail network; on foot, you may move only along the trails marked accordingly both horizontally and vertically. A notable geological feature is Grotta Nera, one of the few caves in the area with characteristic sinter formations made of “latte di monte”.

Churches, caves and remembrance

Grotta Sant'Angelo contains the remains of a rock church dedicated to San Michele Arcangelo and built between the 11th and 12th centuries. The site had previously been associated with the cult of Bona, the goddess of fertility. Thus, an older religious connection and a medieval rock church converge at this site.

Another historical trace is preserved by the Museo del Minatore. It was established at the initiative of former miners from Palombaro and their children to preserve the memory of relatives who had previously emigrated to distant countries for work. The focus is therefore on the family history behind labour migration.

The original church of Santa Maria della Serra (Chiesa dell’Assunta) is part of the area's sacred architectural history. It was built in the 13th century; the present church building was erected in its place in the 16th century. The Chiesa dell’Assunta has a basilica-style layout with three naves and preserves a valuable wooden statue of the Madonna and Child known as Madonna della Libera.

Customs and local cuisine

Fieragosto has been held on 14 August in the historic centre of Palombaro since 2003. The Miracolo di San Domenico, “Lu Lope de Sante Duminiche”, is one of Palombaro's religious customs and is associated with the first Sunday in June. Solina, as well as the apple varieties Tinella and Limoncella, continue to be cultivated in Palombaro. In this way, the town contributes to the Maiella's autochthonous agricultural biodiversity.

Vrache di mulo is part of Palombaro's orally transmitted culinary tradition and is a rich, flavoursome first course. The “Dal Pagano” trattoria serves dishes from Abruzzo and, in particular, from the local tradition, and is known for Vrache di mulo. The dish therefore provides a concrete gateway to the local food culture alongside the area's landscape and historical themes.

Hiking trails and how to get there

Two different route types are documented for planning your journey. The G5 Sentiero della Valle di Palombaro hiking trail leads from the beginning of the Valle di Palombaro to the Rifugio Martellese mountain hut. The Anello di Monte Ugni is designated as a circular route. TUA buses run from Guardiagrele to Palombaro; for the Eremo Grotta Sant'Angelo route, the stop in Tornelli is 2 kilometres from the trailhead.
