Tornareccio – Honey Tradition and Monte Pallano
Tornareccio combines honey traditions, mosaic art, churches, and the landscape of Monte Pallano. This gives you a destination where historic townscapes, archaeological traces, paths through meadows and forests, and regional cuisine exist side by side. Festivals in August and September add further seasonal highlights.
Historic Centre and Sacred Art
In the historic centre, the Museo a Cielo Aperto turns Tornareccio into an open-air museum with 96 mosaics. The Chiesa di Santa Vittoria is a three-nave church with a Latin cross floor plan and was built between 1787 and 1814. Its interior was regarded by the Soprintendenza alle Belle Arti as a national monument.
Monte Pallano and Archaeological Traces
Behind Tornareccio, Monte Pallano rises as a natural landscape where archaeological remains are combined with largely untouched nature. A fortified settlement stood there, founded during the Samnite Wars as a strategic control point in the Sangro Valley. The Mura Paladine have been preserved over approximately 180 metres and reach a height of 5 metres. The Area Archeologica di Monte Pallano can be reached via the road connecting Tornareccio and Colledimezzo.
Paths through Landscape and History
Percorso 503 starts at a bend near Tornareccio’s sports ground and leads through cultivated areas, extensive meadows and pastures, as well as small wooded areas. The Traversata di Monte Pallano begins in Tornareccio and provides access to Lago Nero, Lago la Rifrasina, the archaeological site of Fonte Benedetti, and the Mura Paladine. For your planning, this allows you to distinguish between a route through open cultivated landscapes and a connection to lakes and archaeological destinations.
Honey and Traditional Specialities
The more than century-old beekeeping tradition shapes the town: Around 30 families work in this sector, with approximately 10,000 beehives. You can sample different types of honey, including acacia, citrus, orange, chestnut, eucalyptus, lime blossom, and thyme honey. Traditional cuisine includes classic mozzarella, Treccia, Nodino, Bocconcino, and Fiordilatte, as well as fresh and matured cheeses. Celli Pijne is a bird-shaped pastry filled with jam that traditionally forms part of wedding celebrations and wedding banquets in Tornareccio.
Late-Summer Festivals
Regina di Miele takes place every year in September and highlights the importance of the honey tradition. The 2026 edition will take place on 26 and 27 September in Tornareccio; it includes stalls, tastings, themed conferences, and entertainment. The present-day Santuario della Beata Vergine del Carmine was built in 1886 and completed in 1897. The Feast of the Madonna del Carmine is solemnly celebrated in Tornareccio from 29 August to 31 August. On 29 August, the Processione del Perdono with the Blessed Sacrament and a torchlight procession, followed by a prayer vigil, are held. On 30 August, the image is carried in procession through the entire town.
