Cultural history between baths, palaces and theatre

Roman baths from the Imperial period are located on Via Adriatica. The Neptune mosaic, with its additional depictions of the sea, is particularly impressive.

The Museo del Costume di Palazzo D’Avalos displays valuable Abruzzese clothing and trousseaus from the period between the beginning of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. This means the focus is not only on representative history, but also on clothing and furnishings from a clearly defined era. The Musei Civici di Palazzo D'Avalos and the Scuderie di Palazzo Aragona are also located in the immediate vicinity of Vasto, each being a museum.

The Teatro Rossetti was originally called the Real Teatro Borbonico. Based on its founding date of 1818–1819, it was the second public institution in Abruzzo. When the Teatro Rossetti made its definitive restart in 2007, a full season of concerts and plays was presented for the first time from February to March. The theatre’s history therefore includes both its early institutional importance and its later restart.

A city walk with fixed points of reference

A suggested walk leads from Piazza Verdi – known as “Shangai” among local residents – along Corso Garibaldi to Piazza Barbacani, where you will come across Castello Caldoresco. Castello Caldoresco is a castle in the immediate vicinity of Vasto. The sequence of squares and streets provides a clear route if you want to explore the city’s history step by step.

Coast, nature conservation and a new connection

The Riserva Naturale di Punta Aderci was the first nature reserve established along the Abruzzo coast. This gives Vasto’s coastal side its own landscape profile alongside the historic sites. On 21 May 2026, a connecting route between the Via Verde della Costa dei Trabocchi and Lungomare Duca degli Abruzzi was inaugurated in Vasto.

Local flavour and practical context

The Brodetto di pesce alla vastese, a typical local fish recipe from Vasto, is part of the local character. The name refers directly to the city and adds a culinary dimension to the historical and landscape impressions.

The Ufficio Informazione e Accoglienza Turistica provides another historical point of reference: when it opened, it was located on the ground floor of Palazzo d’Avalos and had its entrance on Piazza del Popolo.
