Ateleta: History, Nature and Local Cuisine

Location and Character

Ateleta combines local history with a landscape in the upper Sangro Valley. The town lies at an altitude of 737 metres on the left bank of the Sangro River and is part of Maiella National Park. The historic centre is located on Colle Sisto below the 1,883-metre-high Monte Secine. The combination of the town centre, river and mountain scenery shapes spatial orientation in Ateleta. History in the Townscape

Ateleta was founded in 1811 after Giuseppe De Thomasis persuaded King Gioacchino Murat to establish the town. When it was founded, the Ateleta area was exempt from taxation for five years. Its earlier history includes the Rocca di Carceri, an ancient fortification destroyed in the earthquake of 1456. In the municipal area by the Sangro River, near the Diga di Ateleta, lie the ruins of the “Taverna del Crudele”. On the grounds of the Feudo Tenuta del Cavaliere, a chapel dedicated to Saint Michele still stands.

The Monumento ai caduti di tutte le guerre stands in Piazza Carolina. Its pedestal is made of marble and bears a bronze chain ring. Also in Piazza Carolina, the stone Cippo commemorativo commemorates the civilian victims of the Second World War and lists the names of the civilian victims born in Ateleta.

Nature, Trails and Wildlife Observation

Ateleta offers various landscape experiences for days spent in nature. The Foresta Demaniale Feudo Carceri can be reached from La Posta in the municipal area of Ateleta via trails M2 and N2 in Maiella Park. The Sentiero del Cervo passes through an old beech forest and along streams that feed Lake S. Antonio; a picnic area is available to visitors there. Deer can be observed all year round beside the lower section of the circular trail in the Area faunistica del Cervo. The picnic area beside the Area Faunistica del Cervo can be reached via the SP 164 towards the Church of S. Antonio, has low-barrier access facilities and offers a view of Serra Tre Monti.

Cycling and Time by the Sangro

The Pista Ciclo-Pedonale in Ateleta forms a single circular route with the three sections Torrente S. Cristoforo, Il Laghetto and La Spiaggetta. La Spiaggetta is a riverside picnic area with fire pits, tables, a playground, a padel court and a pontoon on the river. This makes it possible to combine walks, cycling and breaks at different points in the landscape.

Museum and Regional Specialities

The Museo della Civiltà Contadina is located in the Parco Comunale on Via Sangrina in Ateleta. It contains more than 3,000 items, which were moved to a new location in the Parco Comunale in 2011. A particular local speciality of Ateleta is lamb grilled over the embers of Turkey oak wood. Pasta alla chitarra with lamb sauce is also associated with Ateleta.
