Historic Center and Medieval Townscape

The historic center of Tagliacozzo rises along the slopes of Monte Civita and leads through the medieval urban fabric to Piazza dell’Obelisco. The hillside setting, historic buildings and central square come together to create a distinctive townscape.

The Fontana dell’Obelisco was built between 1823 and 1825 in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua. Its origin reflects the religious character that is intertwined with Tagliacozzo’s history.

The Museo Orientale is located in the monastery of the sanctuary of the same name and preserves an extensive collection of archaeological finds from Asia, the Middle East and the westernmost territories of the Roman Empire. The town’s cultural perspective therefore extends beyond local history.

The Teatro Talia is also one of the town’s notable historic venues. It was established in 1686 in the premises of a Benedictine monastery for men that had been dissolved in 1652, completely renovated and restored, and returned to the town in 2002.

Faggeta di Marsia and a Route

Faggeta di Marsia extends across the municipalities of Tagliacozzo and Cappadocia within the Parco Naturale dei Monti Simbruini. The woodland area therefore extends beyond the municipal boundary and complements the historic center with a distinctly scenic dimension.

Faggeta di Marsia can be reached from the resort village of Marsia, located at an altitude of 1,450 meters above Tagliacozzo’s town center. Sanctuary and Religious History

The Santuario Maria SS. dell’Oriente is located about 3 kilometers from the center of Tagliacozzo. Its icon dates back at least to the first half of the 13th century, giving the sanctuary a historical dimension that reaches far into the past.

Sweet Traditions from Tagliacozzo

In Tagliacozzo, sweet recipes whose origins are attributed to the Benedictine nuns of the 16th and 17th centuries are still baked today. Culinary tradition therefore does not appear here as something separate from history, but as part of everyday local life.

Cavallucci and palommelle are traditional Sunday sweets for Sonntags in albis, that is, the Sunday after Easter. These terms refer to a specific feast day in the annual calendar and give the regional cuisine its own connection to a particular time of year.
