Avezzano combines nature, urban history and cultural sites to create a diverse destination in the Marsica region. If you are looking for a place for your stay with excursion routes, museums, architecture and regional history, you will find various starting points here for planning your trip. The range extends from the Monte Salviano nature reserve to the city’s central cultural sites.

Nature and trails on Monte Salviano

The designated Monte Salviano nature reserve covers approximately 720 hectares, all of which lie within the municipal area of the city of Avezzano. The twelve accessible trails with varying levels of difficulty are particularly interesting for hikers and walkers. They offer views of the Fucine Basin and Monte Velino. This allows you to experience the landscape from different perspectives without all the trails placing the same demands on fitness and time.

The Ciclovia delle Stelle is also part of the local range of options for outdoor activities. It includes green spaces and rest areas, giving it a distinct character alongside the trails of Monte Salviano. Depending on your personal interests, you can therefore experience Avezzano with a stronger focus on longer nature excursions or on more relaxed stays surrounded by greenery.

Castles, squares and stages

Castello Orsini now houses temporary exhibitions. The Orsini family built it in 1490 around a medieval castle; the Colonna family later remodelled the building. Different historical periods are therefore visible in this building, while its changing use as an exhibition venue establishes a connection with contemporary culture.

The Cathedral of S. Bartolomeo, together with Piazza Risorgimento, forms part of the urban centre of Avezzano. Both names represent the urban character of the destination and provide culture-minded visitors with a concrete starting point for exploring the town. Teatro dei Marsi is also an important local venue for music and theatre.

Teatro dei Marsi also preserves paintings and sculptures from the Pinacoteca d’arte moderna. Music, theatre and visual art are thus brought together at this venue. Avezzano can therefore appeal to you not only through its historic buildings, but also through its various forms of cultural expression.

Museums exploring the history of the landscape

The Aia dei Musei cultural complex includes the Museo del Prosciugamento del Fucino and reconstructs the history of the project to drain Lake Fucino. This makes the transformation of the landscape an important museum theme. The lapidarium at Aia dei Musei displays artefacts dating back to the 4th century BC. Anyone interested in the connection between natural environment, human intervention and the past will find different historical periods represented here.

The Museo della Civiltà Contadina e Pastorale, a museum, is also located in the vicinity of Avezzano. The Giardino romantico covers more than five hectares and includes trees and plants of various species, including centuries-old specimens. Together, the two destinations broaden the view of the region to include themes of rural life as well as the diversity and age of its plant life.

Practical information for your stay

Avezzano’s tourist information point provides information about transfers within the city and to other areas, as well as timetables and public transport within the city and to the villages of the Marsica region. This information is particularly helpful if you want to choose your accommodation based on your planned cultural and nature experiences or connect different destinations within the travel area. For individual trip planning, you can thus prioritise exhibitions, museums, trails and venues according to your interests.

Whether you focus on the twelve trails of Monte Salviano, Castello Orsini and the central squares, or the museums dedicated to the history of Fucino, Avezzano offers several clearly distinct ways to explore culture and landscape. Your choice of accommodation can therefore be aligned with your preferred travel rhythm and with the topics you would like to explore in greater depth on site.
