Monticchio between Karst and Culture

Hiking and Karst Features

The first stage of the Cammino Grande di Celestino leads towards Monticchio. If you are planning a trip around this trail, you can therefore consider the village in connection with this first stage.

A second natural highlight is the Dolina di Monticchio. It forms part of the Percorso ad Anello delle Doline; the circular trail allows you to observe characteristic karst features at close range. This gives you a tangible landscape theme based on a specific geological formation and a circular trail.

Modern Culture in the Monticchio–Bazzano Agglomeration

The GRAN TEATRO ZETA – Parco delle Arti adds a more recent cultural highlight to the Monticchio–Bazzano agglomeration. It was inaugurated on 15 December 2012.

In 2018, the Cinema Zeta was created by expanding and adapting the Gran Teatro Zeta. The present-day Cinema Teatro Zeta in the Monticchio–Bazzano agglomeration of L’Aquila is recognized by the DGCOL department of the Ministry as a cinema with an arthouse program.

Forcona and San Nicola di Bari

The ancient site of Forcona is located in the vicinity of Monticchio. The parish church of Monticchio is dedicated to San Nicola di Bari. The church has a single-nave layout and a rectangular façade made of hewn stone blocks. Forcona and San Nicola di Bari therefore represent different cultural and historical interests.

Monticchio is also associated with a wooden statue of San Nicola di Bari dating from the 14th century. It was kept and venerated in the parish church of Monticchio until 1913. The statue is 186.7 centimetres high and 43.5 centimetres wide and is dated to the period between 1350 and 1375. The sacred theme thus extends from the architectural form of the church to a specific work of art that has been measured and dated.
