Castel del Monte lies south of Campo Imperatore at an altitude of 1,345 metres and is part of the Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga. Here, you will find a destination where hiking trails, village history, crafts and regional cuisine are closely intertwined.

Village history along paths and in museums

The Ricetto is the oldest residential centre of Castel del Monte. Its layout forms a labyrinth of alleyways with ring walls and arches carved into limestone. The Paese Dipinto offers another way to explore the history of the village: the tour through the village uses works by artists to take another look at the origins of Castel del Monte.

The Museo civico Etnografico is a municipal museum spread throughout the village. In seven exhibition rooms, it presents the former life and traditions of Castel del Monte. The Museo della Pastorizia complements it by showing the village’s rural economy based on livestock farming. The Museo dell’Arte della Lana preserves old looms, spinning wheels, important work tools and examples of local textile craftsmanship. The Museo della Casa Antica reconstructs the rooms and furnishings of a typical house in Castel del Monte, while the Museo del Lavoro nei Campi displays equipment used to cultivate the land.

The museum tour through the historic centre is also part of this dense sequence of local insights and leads to the Museo del Forno del Ballo.

Hiking, nature and winter experiences

Numerous hiking itineraries begin in Castel del Monte within the extensive network of trails in the Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga. The village is also a stage on the Ippovia del Parco Nazionale Gran Sasso - Monti della Laga. The Cammino del Gran Sasso is a 61-kilometre circular route divided into five stages; it includes the Campo Imperatore–Castel del Monte stage. The different trail lengths help you organise hiking plans according to your interests and the time available.

In winter, the peaks of Monte Camicia are used for ski mountaineering. Kensho Yoga, based in Castel del Monte, offers another, quieter perspective on natural landscapes by promoting yoga and meditation through short routes in natural settings that are accessible to everyone.

Regional cuisine and lively events

The culinary tradition of Castel del Monte is based mainly on local agricultural and livestock products. The production area of Canestrato di Castel del Monte also includes Castel del Monte. The cheese is made from raw sheep’s milk with salt and rennet, without pasteurisation or heat treatment. Show-cooking demonstrations are announced at Taverna Matrice.

A special cultural occasion is La Notte delle Streghe, a walking theatre event held every year on 17 and 18 August in the medieval village. The event originated in 1996 from an older local custom. The local tourist and cultural information point suggests themed routes and reserves guided tours.
