Fortress, churches and unusual local history

Castello Caldoresco is one of the best-preserved fortifications in Abruzzo. Its first historical mentions can be found in the Chronicon Casauriense from the 11th century. In the Chiesa della Madonna di Loreto, which dates from the late 16th century, history is closely linked to the Corsa degli Zingari. The Chiesa di San Marco was built in the late 17th century and preserves an old fresco of the Madonna dei Sette Dolori. The Chiesa di San Marcello dates back to its foundation in 1047; after a fire, it was rebuilt and reopened in 1166.

The rock paintings of Balze del Morrone are also among the special cultural sites: ochre-colored figures are located there on a narrow rock ledge at an altitude of 680 meters. The entrance to Palazzo La Rocca has served as a museum area since 2015. The museum in the Palazzo displays a Franciscan nativity scene by the artist Peppino Avolio. Near Castello Caldoresco is I canaje, an old public washhouse. La preta tonna, also known as pietra dello scandalo, likewise refers to the history of everyday life in earlier times: the large hollowed-out stone once served as a measure for one tomolo of grain, with one tomolo corresponding to 56 liters.

Festivals combining tradition, history and craftsmanship

The traditional Corsa degli Zingari takes place in Pacentro every year on the first Sunday in September. Its roots lie in the customs and myths of the Peligni; it was later associated with the Christian cult of the Madonna di Loreto. Another historical perspective is offered by I CALDORESCHI nell'Anno del Signore 1450, a six-day historical reenactment in Pacentro that presents scenes of medieval customs in the third week of August.

The winter events also combine the local setting with local creativity. Pacentro's Christmas market takes place until mid-December; stalls run by local artists and craftspeople are also set up at historic house entrances, in alleyways and on squares. In the 2018 edition of the living nativity scene, the scenes led through the town's alleyways to the area beside Castello Caldoresco. This edition also included craft workshops and establishments where typical products such as chestnuts, sweets, pizzas and gnocchi could be sampled. The gastronomic event Pecure allu cutture, held in Pacentro in 2024, restored the town's historical connection to pastoral activity and the mountain landscapes.

Hiking trails and mountain landscapes

The Q5 hiking trail begins in Pacentro on the S.S. 487 at an altitude of 850 meters and ends at Mandra Castrata, at the junction with the Q6 trail, at 1,725 meters. Along the way, it passes through various landscapes, from beech forests to the summit meadows of Morrone.

Passo San Leonardo is a mountain pass at an altitude of 1,282 meters. It separates the Valle dell'Orta in the Pescara area from the Sulmona side of the Majella. The slopes around Passo San Leonardo are suitable for cross-country skiing and ski mountaineering. Hikes to Monte Morrone and Monte Amaro can begin from there.
