San Demetrio Ne' Vestini: Discover Caves, Lakes and Trails

San Demetrio Ne' Vestini is a destination for you if you would like to combine experiences in nature, historic churches and trails with regional culture. Karst spring, lake and landscape

Grotte di Stiffe is a karst spring. At this point, a river resurfaces after flowing underground. This outlet lies at the upper end of the gorge above the small village of Stiffe, which has the same name. The visit takes 60 minutes. The route there and back is 1,400 metres long and equipped with easily accessible walkways and 150 steps, 90 of them consecutive.

The small Lago Sinizzo lies just outside San Demetrio Ne' Vestini. Its shores are covered with grass; forests and pastures also form part of its surroundings. There is an area by the lake equipped for bivouacking. Sentiero N. 6 “Lago Sinizzo – Grotte di Stiffe” connects the lake with the ticket office of Grotte di Stiffe, thereby adding a clear landscape-focused element to your planning.

Trails with different profiles

The Via Crucis is accessible from Villa Cardamone and runs entirely over the bare Calvario hill. The trail is illuminated at night. Sentiero Fontavignone begins in Stiffe, leads through an oak forest and runs for 19 km with an elevation gain of 666 m towards Fontavignone. Sentiero Terranera connects Stiffe and Terranera over 4.3 km with an elevation gain of 490 m.

Sentiero Fossa Campana also begins in Stiffe. It passes a large collapse doline and a bridge of Roman origin before returning to Stiffe on a circular route. Sentiero Tratturo Magno allows you to walk along a section of the Tratturo Magno, an old transport route that was used in winter for sheep transhumance to the Tavoliere delle Puglie. The different trail lengths and elevation gains help you compare nature and cultural experiences by scope.

Churches and historical evidence

The Chiesa di San Demetrio Martire was completely renovated in 1600 and dedicated to Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki. Its bell tower dates from 1200. Originally, it was a military tower and belonged to an optical communication system between the surrounding villages. The church also contains a Rosary polyptych from 1565.

The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista is the oldest church in the town. It was built between the 11th and 12th centuries as a parish church. Inside, it preserves 15th-century frescoes depicting the Madonna of Loreto with the Child and Christ on the Cross, which are attributed to Raphael's school. A papal coat of arms is located at the side entrance. In a bull issued in 1178, Pope Alexander III granted the church the privilege of being affiliated with the Archbasilica of San Giovanni in Laterano in Rome.

The Palazzo Cappelli di Torrano is also located in the surroundings of San Demetrio Ne' Vestini, a fortified 18th-century building with vaulted stables. Sentiero N. 9 “Delle Vasche del Lino e della Canapa” passes stone basins; they were formerly used for retting hemp.
