Pianelle: Mountain Landscape, Cycling Routes and Rural Baking Culture

Pianelle can be discovered from various perspectives: through striking rocky landscapes, mountain bike and e-bike trails, local baking traditions, and a cuisine rooted in agricultural products. The area also offers local history and events in which community participation is visible.

Mountain Landscapes with Names of Their Own

Historically, La Piaggia at 1,650 m was climbed via a winding path through a gorge running west of Pianelle. The rocky summit of the Serra, also visible from the village of Pianelle below, likewise has a local name: it is known as “ju pìzzole delle pianèlle.” Both landscape references give the area a clear mountain character, without implying anything about the current usability of the historic paths.

A walk within and beyond the hamlet of Pianelle was organized around the theme “paesaggio fragile.” The expression draws attention to the landscape as a sensitive habitat. Another historical reference is a square in Pianelle named after Francesco Colaiuda, one of the “Nove Martiri aquilani.”

Mountain Bike and E-Bike Routes

A mountain bike route through Tornimparte follows the SP 1 Amiternina through Pianelle. The route leads to Rifugio Ferrarecce, visible amid the green valley, and follows CAI trail 1D through dense beech forests and open clearings. In this way, the route combines road sections with forest and landscape passages.

Another perspective is offered by a circular e-bike route that starts and ends in Pianelle. Its course passes through Cerasolo, Faggio Martino, Ferrarecce, Ruella and San Nicola. For an e-bike excursion, the start and finish in Pianelle give the loop a clear geographical framework; returning to the starting point is part of the route and influences further planning.

Agriculture and Local Cuisine

The Home Restaurant Agricolo di Rosalba in Pianelle di Tornimparte worked with products from its associated farm, Azienda Agricola Di Prospero Rosalba. The farm belonging to the Home Restaurant Agricolo di Rosalba supplied more than 90 percent of the food prepared for guests. This included eggs, truffles and horse meat.

Baking Tradition as a Village Experience

At Forninfesta, stalls offered freshly baked products for tasting. In old tuff ovens, visitors could watch pizza and loaves being baked at close hand. At Forni in festa in Pianelle, the local Pro Loco and the residents of the district were involved in organizing the event.

Forninfesta was held in Pianelle for the fourth consecutive year, reviving the old local art of breadmaking. Alongside mountain and cycling experiences, this places food traditions shaped by the community at the heart of Pianelle’s local history.
