Vittorito between Borgo, Mountain Panorama and Wine Tradition

Vittorito lies amid a pine forest on the slopes of Monte Castellano and in the immediate vicinity of the Aterno River. The Belvedere Peligno Monumentale on Monte Castellano offers panoramic views. Vittorito thus combines woodland, a hillside setting, proximity to the river and panoramic views into a place with a clearly defined landscape setting.

Upper Borgo and Medieval Traces

In Vittorito’s upper Borgo, stone house façades with bifora windows stand alongside a series of small palazzi that follow the contours of the hill. Palazzo Nobile is a group of rural houses in the Borgo Superiore that were transformed into an aristocratic residence in the 13th century. The ruins of a Lombard castle also rise in the upper Borgo. According to the Chronicon Casauriense, this is the same Rocca that Vittorito possessed during the region’s fortification phase from 1076 onward.

Churches with Art and History

The Church of Madonna del Borgo preserves valuable frescoes and stucco work from the early 15th century. San Michele Arcangelo was built in the 15th century after an older chapel dating from the 9th to 10th century was expanded. The church has a ciborium decorated with 15th-century frescoes and contains numerous fragments from the Roman period associated with the nearby site of Corfinium. The Church of San Rocco was built in the 16th century as a votive church during the plague.

A Monument at Largo Italia

The Vittorito war memorial stands at Largo Italia and dates from approximately 1928 to 1958. A stone pedestal surrounded by marble slabs supports a stone sculptural group: a woman holds the lifeless body of a soldier.

Wine, Olive Oil and Local Places

Vittorito’s wine and olive-growing culture is reflected in several specific features. Extra virgin olive oil from Vittorito is associated with the “rustica e gentile” olive variety. The historic Pietrantonj cellars in Vittorito were included in the FAI’s “Giornate di Primavera.” The Museo del Vino was recently opened in Palazzo Rivera. The Pietrantonj family’s connection to viticulture and winemaking in Vittorito can be traced back more than 200 years.

Festivals in the Annual Calendar

Local traditions include the patronal feasts of Madonna del Borgo and San Biagio on May 21 and 22. The Sagra del Vino in Vittorito takes place during the first week of August. If you plan your trip around festivals and wine traditions, these provide two different dates to consider.
