Its rectangular floor plan, single nave, barrel vault and hemispherical apse vault give the building a clearly recognisable form. The year of construction is unknown; in 1743, the church already existed under the name “Chiesa della M. del Carmine extra moenia”. The Italian addition indicates that it stood outside the town’s fortification walls.

Valle Giumentina and Traces of Early History

The Ecomuseo del Paleolitico - Valle Giumentina displays six dry-stone huts as part of an informative trail through the natural, archaeological and historical landscape. The ecomuseum also includes an open-air laboratory for experimental archaeology. There, visitors can learn techniques for working flint. The archaeological site of Valle Giumentina is considered one of the most significant testimonies to the Lower and Middle Paleolithic in Abruzzo.

The Capanne a tholos are dry-stone structures built by shepherds and farmers as shelters. The main building is the largest of approximately 500 examples scattered throughout the surrounding area and is also the only one with two storeys. The architectural form demonstrates how closely the traditional cultural landscape is connected with human activities.

Festivals, Spelt and Literature

The Sagra del Farro in Abbateggio is part of the local tradition. It takes place every year on the feast day of the town’s patron saint, San Lorenzo. During the festival, you can sample traditional dishes prepared exclusively with spelt. In July, Abbateggio (PE) also hosts the Premio Nazionale di Letteratura Naturalistica “Parco Majella”, a literary competition for literature on natural history and ecology.
