Nature between Hiking Trails and the Orta Canyon

Musellaro combines a varied landscape with striking limestone formations and a concentrated local history.

The A3 hiking trail from Bolognano to Musellaro initially leads through mixed forest and then, near Musellaro, through olive groves, vineyards and cultivated fields. Along the A2 hiking trail from Musellaro to San Tommaso, the Luco plain is characterized by imposing limestone towers, a dense centuries-old oak forest and several cultivated fields.

Near Musellaro, the so-called “Rapide di Santa Lucia” form the narrowest and most spectacular section of the Orta Canyon. The fast-flowing blue-green water has shaped the narrow limestone banks into meanders, waterfalls and potholes. The Rapide di Santa Lucia are also among the most important geosites in the Maiella Geopark. Established in 1989, the Valle dell’Orta Regional Nature Reserve is part of Maiella National Park, covers 378 hectares and extends across the municipalities of Sant’Eufemia a Majella, Roccacaramanico, San Vittorino, Caramanico Terme, Salle, Musellaro, San Valentino and Bolognano in the Province of Pescara.

Church, Sacred Image and Historical Traces

An important landmark in the village is the Church of Santa Maria del Balzo. Access is through the main portal at Piazza SS. Crocifisso, 65020 Musellaro PE. The church was consecrated in 1213 as Santa Maria del Castello di Musegliero. Its entrance portal bears the coats of arms of the Davalos-d’Aquino families and is dated 1519. The local history thus spans from the consecration in 1213 to the coats of arms visible on the portal from 1519. For those interested in culture, Santa Maria del Balzo and the Palazzo Baronale offer two different historical points of reference in the village.

The Santissimo Crocifisso of Musellaro is now kept in the chapel of the Church of Santa Maria del Balzo. It is the subject of continuing popular devotion and a destination for pilgrimages, especially on September 19, when its feast is celebrated every year. Thus, alongside its natural landscapes, Musellaro also has a religious and community connection that continues to the present day.

The old part of Musellaro contains an ancient fortified complex of houses and a castle. Its core is the Palazzo Baronale, which bears the name Castello di Musellaro. The Castello di Musellaro consists of three building sections with different uses; the central section now serves as a hostel. A loophole is visible at the second entrance of the main façade.
