Discover Canzano: History, Churches and Regional Cuisine

Canzano lies on a hill overlooking the valley below and the Gran Sasso mountain range. The town combines historical remains, religious art, an embroidery tradition and regional cuisine. Its elevated location and historic center offer contrasting highlights: the view extends across the valley and Gran Sasso, while the caves and religious buildings are connected to earlier forms of everyday life and devotion.

Historical Traces in the Town

Visible remains include parts of the medieval defensive wall, built in the 14th century by the Acquaviva family. The Torrione of Canzano is another circular fortification dating from the 14th to the 15th century.

Churches, Art and Traditions

San Salvatore preserves frescoes from the 12th to the 14th century. The Baroque church of Madonna dell’Alno stands on Colle Castellano; it houses a painting by Pasquale Richi of Montereale dated 1601. The year 1601 refers to the painting and not to the construction date of the church.

Madonna dell’Alno is also associated with a religious tradition. According to the tradition, three apparitions of the Virgin Mary took place on May 18, 19 and 20, 1480. The small Chapel of Perdono stands at the site of the first apparition.

The church of the Congrega del Santissimo Sacramento, dating from the 18th century, stands in Piazza Rinascimento. The church in Piazza Rinascimento adds another specific location within Canzano.

Crafts, Provisions and Regional Cuisine

A dense network of caves extends through the historic center. They were formerly used to collect rainwater and store food. The former use of the caves remains a historical reference; this still does not indicate any present-day function.

Canzano’s embroidery tradition includes “punto Canzano,” designed by Editta Serpente. Alongside the town’s stone and religious heritage, this represents a textile expression of local craftsmanship.

Tacchino alla canzanese is a dish from Canzano and the surrounding area that has been prepared there since at least the mid-19th century. Its regional connection extends beyond Canzano.

Getting There and Trip Planning

From Giulianova, a regional train runs towards Teramo to the Castellalto-Canzano stop; from there, you can reach Canzano by a short bus ride. The journey is therefore arranged as a combination of a regional train and a bus ride. When planning a journey from Giulianova, Castellalto-Canzano is the transfer point before the short bus ride. The two forms of transport therefore constitute separate stages of the same journey. The bus ride forms the second part of the connection to Canzano.
