Cogne between mountain meadows and the national park

Cogne lies in the heart of Gran Paradiso National Park and combines an alpine landscape with a remarkable variety of natural, cultural and sporting experiences. The Sant’Orso meadow near Cogne is one of the largest mountain meadows in Europe. In the well-known Prà Suppiaz peatland in the Cogne Valley, typical aquatic plants as well as fish and amphibian species can be observed, including brown trout and common frogs. The landscape therefore presents itself not only as a mountain backdrop, but also as a habitat that you can appreciate more closely through quiet observation.

Alpine flora and nature education

A special natural site is the Paradisia Alpine Botanical Garden in Valnontey, a hamlet of the municipality of Cogne. It lies in the heart of the national park at an altitude of 1,700 metres and covers approximately 10,000 square metres. More than 1,000 plant species grow in the garden; Paradisia also reconstructs natural habitats. Guided tours are offered daily at set times, while independent visits are also possible.

The Tutelattiva Laboratorio Parco focuses on water, forests and pastures, as well as the relationships between fauna and people. Those who do not want to get to know the surroundings only in passing will find topics here that draw attention to the natural connections in the valley.

Hiking, waterfalls and special experiences

Cogne offers an extensive network of hiking trails, winter walking paths and snowshoe routes. These paths allow you to hike in Gran Paradiso National Park at any time of year. The Lillaz–Valeille route is an easy circular hike leading into the broad Valeille Valley, dominated by glaciers. The Lillaz Waterfalls are a popular destination for families in summer and for a pleasant walk.

The destination also offers unusual excursions: the Costa del Pino Mine can be visited with a guide. Visitors wear a helmet with a headlamp and enter the inside of the mountain. The Cogne Valley is also home to more than 150 icefalls, which attract ice climbers from all over Europe.

Buildings, crafts and cultural life

The Maison Gérard-Dayné is a traditional rural house in the Aosta Valley, built of wood and stone. Its history is documented in 17th-century records; the house was built in 1670 by the Jay or Gex family. Today, the Maison de Cogne Gérard-Dayné houses an ethnographic museum with agricultural tools, everyday objects and traditional costumes. Cogne also has a permanent exhibition dedicated to traditional Cogne lace-making, as well as a permanent exhibition of wooden sculptures by the artist Dorino Ouvrier.

The cultural character also includes the Lou Tintamaro folk and choir group. It performs in the original traditional costume with accordions, as well as drums decorated with colourful ribbons and bells. The Gran Paradiso Film Festival takes place in Cogne, in the valleys of Gran Paradiso and online, and primarily presents wildlife films. In 2026, the 29th edition was held as part of a tradition spanning more than 40 years.

Winter, sports and choosing your accommodation

For winter sports enthusiasts, Cogne has 80 kilometres of cross-country ski trails with 12 loops. The various hiking, winter walking and snowshoe routes complement this offering, without the destination being limited to a single season. Another sporting connection is the Gran Paradiso Bike, a regularly held 40-kilometre mountain bike race associated with Cogne.
