Discover Lillianes: Chestnut Culture, Trails and History

Lillianes offers a destination where the Torrente Lys, historic buildings and trails reveal different sides of the village. The Torrente Lys runs through the built-up area of Lillianes; the landscape shaped by chestnut cultivation, trails through scattered hamlets and the forest path to Rifugio Coda provide different focuses for your stay.

Church, Bridge and Gold Mine

The historic stone bridge of Lillianes was built in 1733. The parish church of San Rocco, completed in 1723 on the foundations of a chapel dating from 1490, contains a Baroque high altar. It was created between 1763 and 1770 by the sculptor J.B. Gilardi and his son Giuseppe.

Gold was mined for ten years, from 1816 to 1826, in the gallery of the Revers gold mine. The gallery can be entered with a flashlight.

Flat Trails and Routes Through the Hamlets

For an easy walk, the Passeggiata del Canale is a good choice. The path is completely flat and is also recommended for families with small children. The Passeggiata del Canale is also well suited to mountain biking. Those who want to combine walking and cycling will therefore find two different uses for the same path here.

The Colle della Lace is crossed by the Grande Attraversata delle Alpi. The Cammino Balteo stage from Pont-Saint-Martin ends in Lillianes. The Tour dei villaggi passes through the scattered hamlets, which are known for their rural architecture and old chapels. The Percorso delle Grehe (also known as Gra) leads to the surviving rooms where chestnuts were dried. Along the Percorso delle Grehe, surviving drying rooms can still be seen; the museum displays tools and objects from the former processing of chestnuts.

On the way to Rifugio Coda, follow Trail No. 1 through a larch and birch forest. Depending on your personal interests, you can make a flat walking trail, a route through the hamlets or a forest path the focus of your plans.

Chestnut Culture and Seasonal Experiences

In October, the Museo della Castagna allows visitors to follow the current stages of the chestnut harvest and processing. The museum is located in the building of the “Il Riccio” cooperative. It displays tools and objects that were used, especially in the past, to process chestnuts. A visit to the museum thus connects the seasonal cycle with the surviving traces of traditional work.

In summer, the “Lillianes Beach” opens along the Torrente Lys, where beach volleyball and other sports tournaments are organized.
