Corato can be explored through archaeological sites, a museum and trails through the landscape. This gives you the opportunity to combine different travel interests: you can learn about the early history of the surrounding area, follow a route through agricultural land and consider other destinations in the nearby area. The main themes are therefore not concentrated in a single attraction, but rather in the combination of culture, landscape and excursion destinations.

Daunian Heritage and Notable Buildings

A central attraction is the San Magno Necropolis. It extends over approximately two square kilometres and comprises around 80 tumulus tombs built from large limestone blocks. The excavated tombs point to a Daunian cultural phase from the 7th and 6th centuries BC. Those interested in the early history of the region will therefore find a clearly defined archaeological subject here, of remarkable scope.

The grave goods from the excavated tombs of the San Magno Necropolis are kept at the Museo della Città e del Territorio di Corato. The museum is housed in Corato's former prison, a building dating from the early 20th century. The Dolmen dei Paladini represents another form of prehistoric heritage: it is a megalithic tomb in the area surrounding Corato, in Contrada Colonnella. The nearby area of Corato also includes Palazzo Capano, Palazzo de Mattis, Palazzo Gioia and Palazzo Gentile; all four are palaces.

Trails Through the Landscape

Percorso D “Stazione di Corato – Necropoli di S. Magno” runs entirely along paved roads from Corato railway station to the San Magno Necropolis. Outside the urban area, it follows the lightly trafficked S.P. 19 road. The first section passes through a rural mixed landscape with small agricultural plots where olive and almond trees are cultivated. Buildings used as second homes are located between these plots. The route thus showcases a landscape in which agricultural use and individual residential buildings stand side by side.

For broader cycling or walking plans, the “Jazzo Rosso - San Magno - Castel del Monte” route is relevant. It is approximately 67 km long overall, bears the alphanumeric code C01AM (Ciclovia 01 Alta Murgia) and consists of seven interconnected routes. The information about the total length and the individual routes helps you distinguish this network of trails from a single section such as Percorso D and classify your desired plans more clearly.

Beaches in the Surrounding Area
