Rutigliano Between Ceramic Art, History and Festivals

Rutigliano combines ceramic art, ancient traces and festivals that bring local traditions to life. You can get to know the town from several perspectives: in museums, in the historic center, at archaeological sites and at events centered around terracotta and table grapes. Ceramics as a Cultural Trace

At the Museo Civico del Fischietto in Terracotta “Domenico Divella,” you will encounter a unique collection history. The museum was established in 2004 in the former Dominican monastery of Palazzo San Domenico, dating from the 16th century, and houses more than 800 ceramic whistles from various regions of Italy. Its exhibition also presents the prize-winning whistles from the National Competition, which takes place annually in Rutigliano at the same time as the Fiera del Fischietto in Terracotta and the Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot.

The Museo Civico Archeologico “Grazia e Pietro Di Donna” combines ancient pottery production with Rutigliano’s modern ceramic art and the present-day manufacture of clay whistles in its exhibition. In this way, older craft traditions and contemporary ceramic art come together in a shared cultural theme.

Historic Center and Ancient Evidence

The Chiesa di Santa Maria della Colonna was built in 1059 in the historic center of Rutigliano, which is surrounded by the ancient city walls.

In the area of Sant’Apollinare and its immediate surroundings, archaeological finds attest to settlement from the 6th century BC to the 10th or 11th century. Based on its architectural typology, the ruins of the medieval church of Sant’Apollinare can be dated to the period between the 10th and 11th centuries; however, precisely dating the building is difficult.

Archaeological documentation on Rutigliano, the Peucetian center known as Azetium, has been compiled through excavations and research in the Rutigliano area. The Torre Normanna offers a wide view over all of Rutigliano, thereby providing a spatial accent to the historical themes.

Table Grapes and Community Festivals

The Sagra dell’Uva celebrates table grapes, an outstanding product of Rutigliano and an important part of its economy. The program includes gastronomic tours.

Terracotta also shapes Picciafuoco. This communal terracotta ritual has brought the historic center of Rutigliano to life for years; the new edition will take place from June 26, 2026, to June 28, 2026, in Piazza Colamussi. At each edition, the community takes part in creating a large artistic oven.

The Fiera del Fischietto in Terracotta is scheduled for January 17 and the following weekend.
