Mariotto between the Murgia Barese and local history

Church and Palazzo Baronale

The parish church of Mariotto is dedicated to the Beata Vergine Addolorata and was inaugurated in 1902, based on a design by architect Luigi Sylos. The Palazzo Baronale dates from 1450/1500 and was built by the Gentile family. The church building is part of the town’s 20th-century history and dates from after the older Palazzo Baronale. At the same time, the Palazzo Baronale provided the impetus for Mariotto’s urban development. The church and palazzo thus connect religious architecture with the emergence of the townscape.

Landscape at the foot of the Murgia

Mariotto lies at the foot of the Murgia Barese. The area around Mariotto is the reason why the municipality of Bitonto is part of the Alta Murgia National Park area. The local and landscape history also includes two rainwater reservoirs. The Cisterna dell’Abbondanza is a reservoir for collecting rainwater and is now integrated into Mariotto’s built-up urban fabric. The Piscina del Chiuso is a rainwater reservoir in the landscape near Mariotto. Together, these places point to the connection between settlement areas, water use and landscape.

Cycling and walking routes

For cycling, the circular route “Sulle strade degli ulivi e della fede” passes through Mariotto and is approximately 25–30 km long. For the “Ciclopedalata della Murgia” scheduled for May 10, 2026, Mariotto (BA) was planned as the venue, along with a 98 km route. When planning your journey to this event, you should take into account that Mariotto is a place without a railway station; for travel by train, continuing by bus from Bitonto was recommended. The different route lengths help you consider the two routes separately when making your own plans.

The route of the “Camminata tra gli Olivi” starts in Mariotto, leads to the Torre di Lerma and returns to Mariotto.
