Gorgofreddo among churches, trulli and Murgia trails

Gorgofreddo combines religious culture, historic architectural forms and trails in the Murgia. The specific local references range from Contrada Gorgofreddo in Monopoli to the foothills above the Zoosafari in Fasano.

Church and Contrada traditions

The Chiesa Santa Maria Immacolata in Contrada Gorgofreddo, Monopoli, is a 20th-century church built by local craftsmen. It therefore belongs to a different period of construction than Trulli Giannina, which dates from 1743.

The traditional religious festival Festa di Maria SS. Immacolata takes place in Contrada Gorgofreddo on August 1 and 2, 2026, as part of Monopoli’s Contrada festivals. The event includes two consecutive festival days.

“Monopoli e le sue contrade” was a route through rural churches, impressive landscapes and local traditions. The 2025 cultural program “La Pietra si racconta” included Gorgofreddo as a stop at rural churches in Monopoli’s Contrade. A municipal tour program through Monopoli’s Contrade led to the Cappella Maria Santissima Immacolata in Gorgofreddo.

Trulli Giannina in the center

Trulli Giannina is located in the center of Gorgofreddo. It is a restored trullo complex dating from 1743 with four cones. This historic architectural form thus stands alongside the newer church building and represents a distinct architectural reference in the village.

Trail network along the Murgia escarpment

The first section of the municipal trail network runs approximately from Contrada Gorgofreddo along the Murgia escarpment to the foothills above the Zoosafari in Fasano.

Monopoli’s trail network also includes sections of the “Murgia dei Trulli” SIC area. Nine trails in the municipal trail network are designated within the municipality of Monopoli. The nine designated trails therefore form a network extending beyond this individual route. There are rest areas near the municipal trails where walkers can take a break before continuing.

Hike from Gorgofreddo to Monte San Nicola

A hike from Gorgofreddo leads to Monte San Nicola, an elevated viewpoint offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

The route is rated moderate, covers 9.3 km, involves 283 meters of ascent and has an estimated duration of 3 hours and 25 minutes. At 3 hours and 25 minutes, the hike should be considered in personal daily planning as a multi-hour tour involving ascent.

Road connection through the Contrade

A road along the edge of the Murgia escarpment connects the Contrade of Santa Lucia, Impalata and Gorgofreddo with the junction of the SS1172. It leads north toward Castellana Grotte and the panoramic SP146 road. The road connection thus names several Contrade as well as two northern directional references.

Local flavors at the festivals

The 2023 festival program in Gorgofreddo included a Sagra. The program featured Panino con la salsiccia, sweet and savory Pettole, and Polpette. The Sagra thus combines savory and sweet foods with the local festivities.

Antonelli, Mariotto, Cozzana, Minervino Murge, Alberobello, Sannicandro Di Bari, Adelfia and Modugno.
