Noicattaro combines a distinctive old town with art, churches and cultural traditions. The historic centre is clustered around the Collegiata di Santa Maria della Pace. Exposed natural stone or tuff, exterior staircases and masonry chimneys are characteristic features of the townscape. This makes it a destination where architecture, local history and religiously shaped festivals come together within a compact thematic setting.

Art and personal history

A particular highlight is the Galleria civica d'arte moderna e contemporanea di Noicattaro. One permanent section of the gallery is dedicated to Dyalma Stultus and comprises 15 donated works. These include the painting “Sosta al ponte” from 1938. The collection therefore presents a clearly defined segment of modern and contemporary art within the cultural context of the town.

The Sala Nicola Pende also houses the study of the physician Nicola Pende. Objects preserved there include medical books, handwritten documents, honours, paintings, personal belongings and diagnostic instruments. This room adds a biographical and historical-scientific dimension to the view of Noicattaro, while remaining connected to the local culture reflected in the townscape.

Palazzo della Cultura and traces of antiquity

The Palazzo della Cultura is located in a former monastery that was renovated in 2001 and converted into a cultural centre. The building contains a museum section with archaeological finds from numerous graves in Peucetian necropolises. These necropolises date from the 6th century BC and are located in the districts of Cipierno, Trisorio and Calcàro in Noicattaro. The town’s cultural arc thus extends from archaeological evidence to modern art and personal documents.

Churches with a distinctive architectural character

The Chiesa dell'Immacolata has a single-nave layout with fresco panels depicting the Immaculate Conception and Saint Roch by Umberto Colonna. The Chiesa di Santa Maria del Carmine is also characterised by its rectangular, single-nave floor plan. There are four chapels on each side.

Festa Patronale Santa Maria del Carmine

The Festa Patronale Santa Maria del Carmine is celebrated in Noicattaro, in the province of Bari, on 16 July and the following weekend. The most important cultural element is three processions held on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. During them, the statue of the Madonna del Carmine is carried through the town’s streets. In addition to the processions, the festival features traditional music and illuminations that decorate the town centre.

A geographical reference on the eastern edge of the town

The Lama Giotta is also known as the Torrente Lama di Pelosa and runs past Noicattaro to the east. Its course continues to the sea, where it reaches its mouth at Torre a Mare.

For planning your trip, the topics can therefore be organised according to your interests: the old town stands for lanes, natural stone, tuff, exterior staircases and chimneys; the churches showcase single-nave spaces, chapels and fresco panels; and the Palazzo della Cultura combines the former monastery with a cultural centre and archaeological finds. Art enthusiasts will find two further distinct focal points in the Dyalma Stultus section and the Sala Nicola Pende. Noicattaro thus offers a range of starting points for a stay in which you can consciously combine urban history, art, religion and the town’s geographical setting.
