Latiano combines Messapian archaeology, sacred art and vibrant local traditions. Visitors interested in history and culture will find museums, churches, an important monument, regional cuisine and theatre here.

Archaeology and Museums Between History and Knowledge

The archaeological collection of the Casa-Museo Ribezzi-Petrosillo relates to the Messapian archaeological site of Muro Tenente. The exhibitions also focus on Latiano, its notable figures and its history. At the Museo del Sottosuolo, thousands of biological, geological, anthropological and palaeontological finds await you in four sections. One of them is dedicated to speleology and displays formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone curtains, helictites, mountain milk and pisoliths.

The Centro di Documentazione Archeologica A. Marseglia takes visitors through history with its collection, from prehistory through the Hellenistic and Late Roman periods to the Middle Ages. It was established with more than 300 archaeological finds and documents relating to the Muro Tenente excavation site. In the archaeological park, a Messapian house was reconstructed on the foundations of a residential building dating from the 3rd century BC. The park has a visitor centre with toilets and classrooms, as well as paths with information panels that are also accessible to people with reduced mobility.

Churches, Monuments and Sacred History

The Chiesa del SS. Crocefisso is home to a venerated wooden crucifix from the 17th century. The Chiesa di Santa Maria della Neve was built at the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century on the remains of an earlier church dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The Santuario della Madonna di Cotrino was built beside a 17th-century chapel that preserves a fresco of the Virgin, which has been restored several times. The castle, now the Palazzo di Città, also reflects several building phases: it was erected in the 17th century on an existing 16th-century structure.

The Monumento San Bartolo Longo was inaugurated on 9 November 1968. The five-metre-high bronze work was created from a design by the sculptor Giacomo Erriquez and depicts Bartolo Longo embracing two children. Relief panels depict the fifteen Mysteries. The rooms of his birthplace illustrate aspects of his life and include a tapestry depicting the Madonna di Pompei and a portrait of Padre Radente.

Art, Pharmacy and Local Forms of Expression

The Museo della Storia della Farmacia preserves objects from the 18th to the 20th century that illustrate the history of medicine and pharmaceutical art. On display are objects, instruments, albarelli, prescriptions and medicines. Many paintings in the Quadreria Imperiali are attributed to the Neapolitan painter Girolamo Cenatiempo. The Pinacoteca Comunale was established in 2004 and contains works by contemporary artists from Apulia, as well as 18th-century paintings from the Neapolitan school.

Latiano's cultural present includes the Rassegna teatrale in Vernacolo. Through theatre, it brings the traditions, stories and language of the region to the stage; in 2026, its 36th edition took place. In culinary terms, the traditional Sagra ti li Stacchioddi celebrates orecchiette with tomato sauce and brasciole, served according to Latiano's old culinary tradition.
