Ceglie Messapica: History, Landscapes and Routes

Ceglie Messapica combines an impressive historic center with cultural attractions and excursions through the countryside. The historic center is characterized by a maze of narrow streets, often paved with Chianche, and distinctive spontaneous architecture. Between the alleyways, museums and excursion destinations, the town reveals a place where Messapian history, later buildings and the landscape of the area stand closely alongside one another.

Castello Ducale and Historical Evidence

A prominent landmark in the town’s history is the Castello Ducale. The square tower was built in 1492 during the rule of the Sanseverino family. The Castello Ducale also preserves visible traces of its military character. This makes the historical background tangible not only through a date, but also through the surviving architectural impact of the building.

The Centro Documentazione Archeologica offers further insights into the past. One section is devoted to the defensive system of Ceglie Messapica, with the rings of walls locally known as “Paretoni” and the Specchie. The center presents the history of Ceglie Messapica from prehistoric times to the Hellenistic period. Those interested in the area’s early cultures will therefore encounter both archaeological structures and a development reaching far back in time.

Art at Palazzo Allegretti

In the old center of Ceglie Messapica, the Pinacoteca Emilio Notte is housed in the painted halls of the 19th-century Palazzo Allegretti. The Pinacoteca opened at Palazzo Allegretti in 1977 and displays works by the painter Emilio Notte. Emilio Notte was a co-author of the Futurist Manifesto of 1912. A visit therefore combines the rooms of a historic palace with an artist whose name is directly associated with the Italian avant-garde.

Grotta Montevicoli and Seasonal Features

Grotta Montevicoli is also one of Ceglie Messapica’s distinctive natural and experiential attractions. The large cave contains numerous stalactites and stalagmites, including specimens of considerable size. During the Christmas season, a characteristic artistic nativity scene is also set up in the rear part of Grotta Montevicoli. The cave and the seasonal display create different focal points within the cultural offering.

Bike Tours through Murgia and Salento

Several bike tours and routes with different themes are central to actively exploring the surrounding area. La via delle querce is a bike tour along Tratturi and minor roads between Murgia and Salento, focusing on monumental oak trees. The route is approximately 23 kilometers long with 200 meters of elevation gain. Its asphalt, paved-track and gravel sections are considered suitable for mountain bikes or gravel bikes.

Ceglie del Gualdo, le arterie rurali begins in forests of downy oaks, holm oaks and turkey oaks and follows the area’s Tratturi. The route thus focuses on the different oak stands and rural connections. La via delle Specchie is a themed route for rediscovering the Messapian roots of the area. Both offerings have different focuses from La via delle querce, which is centered on monumental oaks.

Alla ricerca dell’acqua is an excursion associated with Ceglie Messapica that includes visits to Fogge. These are large water-collection cisterns adapted to karst depressions.

Destinations in the Nearer and Wider Surrounding Area

The ancient Messapi site is located near Ceglie Messapica. Mount Monte Trazzonara is also in the surrounding area. The Museo della Civiltà Contadina “Masseria Lupoli” and the Palazzo Siccoda are located there as well. The Museo Civico Di Ostuni is also in the area around Ceglie Messapica. These destinations complement the historic sites within the town with further stops connected to archaeology, landscapes and cultural history.

In the wider regional surroundings of Ceglie Messapica are the beaches Spiaggia di Monticelli, Spiaggia Rosa Marina and Spiaggia Lido Tiziana. The geographical distinction is deliberately maintained: Messapi, Monte Trazzonara, Masseria Lupoli, Palazzo Siccoda and the Museo Civico Di Ostuni are assigned to the surrounding area, while the three beaches are located in the wider regional surroundings.
