Calimera reveals itself through tangible evidence of history, faith and local culture. Since 2003, the Casa-museo della Civiltà Contadina e della Cultura Grika has been located in a characteristic courtyard house in the historic centre. It brings together the themes of rural life and Grika culture, offering a focused introduction to the history of the town.

Churches with a Distinctive Architectural and Religious History

The Chiesa madre di Calimera is a single-nave church built in 1689 on the ruins of an older two-nave temple. Its interior has a Latin-cross floor plan and preserves nine altars with valuable paintings. These include the Madonna della Misericordia, whose depiction of a pregnant Madonna is attributed to Catalano.

Several trapdoors in the Chiesa madre di Calimera provide access to underground tombs. The Chiesa di San Vito is located in the countryside east of the cemetery, near an entrance to the old Bosco di Calimera, and dates back to the 16th century. It is first mentioned in a notarial deed dated 6 March 1468.

Rituals and Festivals Throughout the Year

San Vito is associated with a traditional ritual: on Easter Monday, people in Calimera pass through the pierced stone at the San Vito chapel. During the San Luigi festival on 21 June, large lanterns made from simple materials hang in the streets; they are lit from the inside. Folk music and folk dances are also part of the celebrations.

The Museo di Storia Naturale del Salento is located in the immediate vicinity of Calimera. It houses the Osservatorio faunistico della Provincia di Lecce, with three centres for the care of wild and exotic animals as well as sea turtles.
