Campi Salentina in the Piana di Lecce

Campi Salentina is located in the Piana di Lecce, a gently sunken landscape within the Salento plain. The countryside around the town includes vineyards and olive groves. Villas and masserie in the surrounding countryside illustrate the rural architecture typical of Salento. Historic Centre and Architecture

The historic centre of Campi Salentina features narrow streets, courtyards and Baroque churches. Palazzo Marchesale has a particular connection with the town's history: the former castle was transformed into the Palazzo Marchesale under the Enriquez family. Since 1990, the Piarists of Campi Salentina have promoted the establishment of the Museo Pompiliano as an illustrative presentation of the history of San Pompilio. The Museo Pompiliano primarily houses objects, everyday items and clothing belonging to the saint, sacred relics, paintings by renowned artists, papier-mâché figures and sculptures depicting him, as well as important documents from his canonisation process. The Madonna dell'Alto is another part of the religious character of the surrounding area. The Madonna dell'Alto chapel stands on Sant'Elia Hill, about eight kilometres from the built-up area of Campi Salentina. The Madonna dell'Alto church can be reached via the Campi–Cellino provincial road and, from kilometre 5, via a track along the former Masseria Pizzuti. The Candido menhir represents an archaeological and rural testimony in the area around Campi Salentina.

Festivals Throughout the Year

Several recurring events give the calendar of Campi Salentina a range of cultural highlights. The Fiera Madonna della Mercede takes place every October and focuses particularly on agriculture, livestock farming and local crafts. The Festa di San Pompilio is celebrated on 14 and 15 July and includes the blessing of San Pompilio bread and a traditional procession.

The Festa di Sant'Oronzo is celebrated every year from late August to early September with processions, masses, concerts and performances. In November, La Città del Libro follows, an annual publishing event.
