Taviano: Old Town, Culture and Coast
Taviano between the Old Town and the Coast
Taviano combines a relatively compact and homogeneous historic centre with cultural sites, sports facilities and a coastal district on the Ionian Sea. Marina di Mancaversa is Taviano’s coastal district on the Ionian Sea. As a result, different impressions come together within the municipality: historic architecture in the town centre, events and library collections on the one hand, and beaches and other destinations in the surrounding area on the other.
Historic Traces and Cultural Sites
The historic centre of Taviano is relatively compact and homogeneous. A precise look at the town’s history leads to the main church: on 8 May 1456, Taviano’s main church was dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours. The Biblioteca Comunale “M. Abatelillo” is also one of the town’s cultural points of interest. It holds two incunabula, one from 1495 and one from 1498. Incunabula are early printed works and give the library collection a distinctive historical character.
The Palazzo Marchesale De Franchis hosts cultural events. In Mancaversa, the Chiesa dell'Immacolata was built between 1985 and 1990. Palazzo Pirelli, a palace, is also located in the surrounding area of Taviano. These places complete the picture of a destination whose cultural themes range from medieval church history to later buildings and contemporary events.
Activities and Relaxation in Parco Ricchiello
Parco Ricchiello offers a wide range of facilities for different interests. There are two tennis courts, a covered volleyball court, two bocce courts, a roller-skating rink and an athletics track. Parco Ricchiello also has play facilities for children, walking paths for adults and benches for relaxation. The park therefore combines active pursuits, outdoor exercise and peaceful breaks in one place. This combination is particularly easy for families and travellers with different daily rhythms to incorporate into their own plans, without limiting their stay to a single activity.
Beaches and Castles in the Surrounding Area
The landscape around Taviano includes several beaches: Punta della suina is a beach in the surrounding area of Taviano, as are Samsara Beach, Zeus Beach and Spiaggia Baia Verde. The coastal destinations complement Marina di Mancaversa as a point of reference on the Ionian Sea and offer a different focus from the historic centre. In the same area, Il Castello is a castle. Castello Angevine-Aragonese and Castel Sant'Angelo are also castles in the surrounding area of Taviano. Those wishing to combine culture and landscape will therefore find various specific destinations, without the town’s history being limited to the town centre.
Flower Market and Local Events
Taviano is one of the five largest flower markets in Italy. Another insight into the local events scene is provided by the Fiera “ta' CAPPEDDHA”: in 2017, it featured a trade fair with an exhibition and sale of objects made through figurative arts and crafts. Together with the cultural events at Palazzo Marchesale De Franchis, this points to a public life in which markets, crafts and culture play a visible role. Taviano can thus be discovered both through its historic sites and through its contemporary offerings and destinations in the surrounding area.
